Horse Racing Tips: All Bets Close With Cousin Casey This Weekend

There’s plenty of fascinating horse racing action to look forward to this weekend including the Grade 1 SA Derby coming your way from Turffontein on Saturday.

Turffontein (Saturday)

Race 3 – Big Burn

Sheela loves this course and distance and has been in the consistent form before going on a break. She gets to draw 1 with S’manga Khumalo in the irons and the pair should be very hard to beat in the run down to the line. She does come off a short break but that shouldn’t affect her at all in this contest. Big Burn is a speedy filly taking on the boys in the Citizen Pinnacle Stakes. She has a huge weight advantage and gets the services of Siyanda Sosibo who gets an extra 2.5kgs off. The daughter of Elusive Fort will be looking to make her impeccable gate speed count and going over just 1000m, she could be the value in the race.

Race 5 – Gobsmacked

The highly-rated Gobsmacked returns to the track after an 18-week break after her unbeaten streak had come to an end. The daughter of Querari has won four of her five runs and is speedy out the gates. She lost her last start on the line and if fit, she could serve as a banker in all exotic bets for the braver punter.

Race 6 – Horse Chestnut Stakes (Gr 1) – Bingwa

Bingwa looks the value in the Horse Chestnut Stakes with Gavin Lerena aboard. The son of Pathfork needed his comeback run, and now with the one run under his belt, he should be fit enough to blow this field away. His last start over 1600m came in the Charity Mile, where he won by two and a half lengths.

Race 7 – SA Derby (Gr 1) – Son Of Raj

Son Of Raj takes a huge step up in class but seems to have an ability about him. He’s passed the stamina test and should see out the 2450m distance with relative ease. The wide draw shouldn’t be a concern for him and with the services of in-form Keagan De Melo on board, who are chasing Anthony Delpech’s record, the pair should be tough to oppose in the SA Derby.

Greyville (Sunday)

Race 2 – Beyondtheboundary

Beyondtheboundary won a trip short of his bet last time after returning from the Western Cape. The son of Gimmethegreenlight is in good order and should be up to the task at hand to defeat the other runners in this race. Sean Veale retains the ride from a mid-field draw of 5 and if producing its regular form, he does look like the horse to include in all multiples.

Race 5 – Time Fo Orchids

Time Fo Orchids is well above the class in this field after holding her own against much tougher opposition in feature race meetings. She gets her first run for the Alyson Wright camp and gets the ride of Sean Veale. She drops back to sprinting and has a neat draw of gate 3 to contend in.

Race 6 – Canadian Summer

One of two Graded races on Sunday comes in Race 6 as Canadian Summer looks for the horse to beat in the Umzimkhulu Stakes. Jason Gates has ridden her for all seven of her starts with four wins and three second-placed finishes. Her preferred distance is a mile, although she is unbeaten over this distance, and with her handy tactics, she should take the power of beating.

Race 7 – Cousin Casey

The best bet of the weekend and what all multiples are likely to close with, Cousin Casey seems to be the standout pick. He held up strong in the early stages of the Met and looked like a winner at some point in the race. He takes on a much weaker field this time around and despite being the odds-on favourite, it’s not even worth looking past him.
