T20 World Cup 2022: 5 Players to Watch

Lwanele Poswayo takes a look at the 5 players to watch during the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Proteas T20 World Cup Squad

Round one of the 2022 T20 World Cup gets underway on Sunday with eight teams battling it out for four spots in the Super 12.

Lwanele Poswayo takes a look at the 5 players you should keep an eye on during the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Suryakumar Yadav (India)

If you’ve been following my recent betting tips then you won’t be surprised to see “SKY” on this list. The emergence of Suryakumar Yadav in 2022 has been amazing, with him being arguably the most important player in Rohit Sharma’s side.

His amazing T20I form has seen him rise to 2nd in the T20I batter rankings. He’s scored over 700 runs this year which saw him surpass Shikar Dhawan’s 689 runs in 2018 for the most T20I runs scored by an Indian batsman in a calendar year.

If India are to go deep into the tournament, I expect Yadav to be amongst the highest run scorers in Australia.

Tristan Stubbs (South Africa)

South Africa’s superstar in the making has had an impressive start to his T20I career. He is among the most feared strikers of a cricket ball in world cricket with a strike rate of 191.9. He was snatched up by the Mumbai Indians in this year’s IPL, coming in as a replacement for Kieron Pollard and made his IPL debut before he played a game for the Proteas which further shows his immense talent.

Stubbs made an instant impression in his first batting innings in international cricket, smashing 72 off 28 balls with a stunning eight sixes against England in July this year. He will have no difficulty clearing the big boundaries Down Under and could play an important role in the Proteas’ plans for the T20 World Cup.

Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka)

Hasaranga had a brilliant T20 World Cup last year claiming the most wickets (16) and backed that up by winning the Asia Cup with Sri Lanka and also walking away with the Player of the Tournament award.

Spin will again play a huge role at this year’s T20 World Cup and you can put your money on Wanindu ending the tournament as Sri Lanka’s top bowler and among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.

Arshdeep Singh (India)

With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the tournament through injury, Arshdeep Singh becomes a vital part of India’s plans for the T20 World Cup. The 23-year-old left-arm quick has impressed throughout the year with his ability to bowl during the Powerplay and death overs.

He’s taken 19 wickets in 13 T20Is at an average of 19.78 and an economy rate just above eight runs per over. Arshdeep impressed in the series against South Africa taking 5 wickets in the two matches that he played. His ability to swing the new ball both ways should come in handy in Australian conditions.

Tim David (Australia)

The Singapore-born Australian had a brilliant IPL 2022 for the Mumbai Indians, scoring 186 runs at an average of 37.20 with an unbelievable strike rate of 216.28 in 8 matches. He faced 86 balls and hit 16 of them for six, finishing the season with the best-ever strike rate for a batter in a single campaign (min. 50 balls) despite being dropped early on in the competition.

He’s also been brilliant for Australia since making his debut last month and will have a key role to play for the defending champions, especially with Glenn Maxwell’s poor form.
