Australian Open 2025 Women’s Favorites

The first Grand Slam gets underway on Sunday 12 January with the ladies eager to open the season in a high spirit.

Aryna Sabalenka will be a huge favorite considering she has won the tournament in the past two seasons. Plus she will arrive as the top seed.

Meanwhile, American sensation Coco Gauff will hope to get the year on high note in order to cement her status as among the leading tennis players in the world. Let’s look at the top five favorites in the women draw.

Aryna Sabalenka

In the past two season, Aryna Sabalenka has made Melbourne Park as the favorite turf, by clinching back to back Australian Open in a commanding fashion. The 26-year-old Belarusian dropped only one set on her way to clinch these two titles.

In preparation for the tournament, Sabalenka opted to use Brisbane WTA 500 in which she had no match winning the tournament by only dropping one set over the weekend. Coming into the tournament as the top ranked player plus good track record on hard court, it would take a huge effort to dispatch Sabalenka easily.

Plus the record is on the line for Sabalenka as she wants to be the sixth lady in the history of the tournament to win in three times in a row after Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, Evonne Goolagong, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis.

Bet Sabalenka to win: 3.25

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is topped by many tennis fanatics as the player to dominate the women’s game in the future. The American star has shown good qualities which has blown many people away considering her age.

The 20-year-old former US Open winner will head into Melbourne carrying the favorite tag just like she did in the previous three tournaments. Last year she fell in the semi-finals to the eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka in what was the pulsating match.

Gauff got the morale bost ahead of the tournament by guiding Team USA to the United Cup victory over Poland. She managed to beat even former World number one Iga Swiatek in straight to show a good form. On her mind, Gauff will want to start the year in a way she finished it as later in 2023, she grabbed China Open and won WTA Finals.

Bet Gauff to win: 5.00

Iga Swiatek

Can Iga Swiatek final break the ice? In her astonishing career, Swiatek has failed to get the act right whenever she steps into Australian Open court. Her best result thus far is the semi-final round back in 2022 edition of the tournament where she lost to Elena Rybakina.

This year she has to overcome the outfield problems in order to get near of fulfilling her long standing dream. The 23-year-old Polish is in the headlines following testing positive for banned substances but she managed to get away without serving a ban. That decision has left many of her competitors expressing that some athletes are receiving special treatment.

The five times Grand Slam winner was outclassed by Coco Gauff in 6-4, 6-4 in United Cup match in which in the end, she ended up not handshaking her opponent. Now, she faces a mountain to climb to rise in unfamiliar surface and she must be mental strong to brush off wrong headlines and play top level tennis.

Bet Swiatek to win: 5.50

Elena Rybakina

After having to cut her season short last year due to illness, Elena Rybakina made an appearance in the United Cup where her nation Kazakhstan lost in the semi-finals to Poland. Now, the 25-year-old make a return to Australian Open with so many questions in mind and will seek for the answers.

Last year, she took a step to win a title when taking a first set 6-4 in the final against Aryna Sabalenka. But everything changed as Sabalenka bounced from the set down to win 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 in the end. That feeling still hurts for sure. As one of the consistent players on court, in the past two seasons she has managed to reach Australia Open semi-final and will want to extend the record further.

Her competitors will be making a huge mistake if they can taking her lightly given an expectational record on hard court surface. There is no doubt Rybakina will have a point to prove.

Mirra Andreeva

In 2023 edition of Australian Open she surprised many people reaching the fourth round of the competition against all odd. On her enroute to fourth round, she defeated pre race favorite Ons Jabeur in the second round. Throughout the year, she went on to reach the French Open semi-finals.
