The Europa League quarter-finals are back tonight with teams looking to book themselves a place in the last four. Let’s look at the matches to bet on.
Barcelona v Eintracht Frankfurt
Barcelona will play host to Frankfurt eyeing to secure a place in this year’s Europa semi-finals. The home side managed to score away from home last week in a 1-1 draw in Germany. Barcelona has a good record against German opposition in European competition, especially at home with the last 16 matches having won 14 losing 2 in the process. But this would be the first time, the Catalans play the fixture outside of UEFA Champions League since 1998. The last fixture was a 2-0 victory over Borrusia Dortmund in the UEFA Super Cup final. Barcelona has only failed to progress in one of their last six knockouts stage ties in the European competition when avoiding defeat in the first leg. With the elimination coming against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals ( 3-0 win at home then 4-0 loss at Anfield)
Frankfurt is unbeaten in the last nine matches against Spanish opposition including winning three and drawing one of the last four away matches. They recently won 2-1 against Real Betis in the previous round of this year’s competition.
Lyon v West Ham
Lyon welcomes West Ham with the upper hand since last week they managed to hold to a 1-1 away draw in England. The draw for Lyon marks the three times out of five outings that the French side has managed to play to a stalemate in the European ties progressing in three of the five instances, the most recent against Chornomorets Odesa in this competition in the 2013/14 season. Lyon are unbeaten in this year’s Uefa Europa League competition in 9 matches ( 6 wins and 3 draws). It’s the third time they have gone nine matches without a defeat in a single season in the major continental competition( 2013/14 UEFA Europa League and 2005/06 Uefa Champions League) never gone 10 matches without a loss.
Lyon has only failed to score in one of their last 28 matches in the Uefa Europa League with that game coming against Atalanta of Italy in the 2017/18 season. They haven’t failed to score at home since their quarter-final tie against Juventus in the 2013/14 season. West Ham have lost three of their knockout away matches in the European competition failing to score in all three matches( 1999/00 vs FCSB( Uefa Cup), 2006/07 vs Parlemo( UEFA Cup), and in the last round against Sevilla. The Hammers failed to win in the previous four Knockout ties when playing at home and they were eliminated in each of the previous three matches( 1965/66 vs Borrusia Dortmund, 1980/81 vs Dinamo Tbilisi, and 2006/07 vs Parlemo)
Lyon are expected to be firing at home and bet them to secure a win.
Atalanta v RB Leipzig
Atalanta will look to use the home-ground advantage against Leipzig to book a place in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Atalanta has never lost a Uefa Europa League match at home in 11 previous matches ( seven wins and four draws). With three of those coming against German opponents, a 1-0 win vs Koln in 1990/91, a 1-1 draw against Borrusia Dortmund, and a 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen last month. Atalanta has progressed in six of their last seven knockout ties when avoided a defeat in the first leg. With the elimination coming against Inter Milan in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup. They haven’t reached the last four of the European competition since the 1987/88 Cup winners Cup doing so as the Italian Serie B outfit. In the four European matches for Leipzig, they have scored 13 goals winning the last two ( 5-0 vs Club Brugge in the Champions League and 3-1 vs Real Sociedad in Uefa Europa League). They never won three consecutive matches away from home in Major European competition.
Leipzig is looking to progress to the last four of the European competition for the second time in history. The last time they reach the semi-finals they lost to Paris Saint-German( PSG) in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League season.
A goal-scoring affair is expected with the backing of over 2.5 goals being valuable.
