DStv Premiership Shooting Analysis: Early Season Indications

After weekend action in the MTN 8, only six teams were in mid-week action with 9 goals coming across the three league games. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns put four goals past Lamontville Golden Arrows, Chippa United held high-scoring Orlando Pirates to a 1-1 draw in Gqeberha and Steve Komphela got his first win as Moroka Swallows coach. In this segment, we take a look at some shooting data and analysis for the DStv Premiership. How much are teams shooting, how accurate are they and from where are they taking their opportunities?

Shots For

Masandawana and the Buccaneers rank first and second for shots taken in the league with 49 and 40 shots taken respectively across their three league games.

17 – Despite playing a game less than the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and others, TS Galaxy have taken the most shots per game of all 16 teams.

18 – The highest number of shots taken in a game this season has been created by four teams (Golden Arrows vs. Moroka Swallows, Orlando Pirates vs. Stellenbosch FC & Cape Town City vs. Polokwane City). The 18 shots and four goals by Mamelodi Sundowns against Golden Arrows on Tuesday evening helped the defending champions join this group.

12 – Royal AM have taken the lowest number of shots yet have somehow managed to have the highest shot on target accuracy at 50%.

3 – Correlation does not equal causation yet the bottom three teams (Cape Town Spurs, Richards Bay, and Royal AM) also find themselves bottom of the shot log table as with the league log table.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates lead the way for shots taken in 2023/24.

2 – Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC are the only two teams who have currently taken a higher proportion of their shots from outside the box.

20 – Cape Town City FC and SuperSport United have the highest proportion of their shots coming from areas inside the box, followed by Sundowns and Pirates.

0 – AmaZulu and Cape Town Spurs are the only teams yet to score a goal in 2023/24. Despite that, Usuthu have taken 17 shots at goal with 13 of them coming from inside the box – unlucky?

Shots Conceded

It has been a rude awakening for Shaun Bartlett and his Cape Town Spurs side as they have conceded the most shots per game of all teams in the division. On the other end of the spectrum, Gavin Hunt has again made his team very difficult to play against as they have only conceded on average 4.5 shots per game.

Next Games

There is more DSTV Prem action throughout the weekend with Royal AM vs Stellenbosch FC and SuperSport United vs Cape Town City FC on Friday evening. Elsewhere, the first leg of preliminary qualification rounds for CAF competitions take place as Orlando Pirates travel to the Comoros to play Djabal.
