Swallows v Orlando Pirates

Swallows’ record against Pirates is a bit wretched having failed to win any of the five encounters in this tie. Yet, all the results in the matches read like binary code: 1-1, 1-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0. Going by that, Under 2.5 goals may be the way to go. When you also consider how blunt the Pirates attack looked in the other Soweto derby (their 7 shots were the lowest for them in 2023), you may be on the right path. Swallows come into this on the back of their first away win of the season and will be keen to build on that momentum and get further away from the relegation zone. Their home form, meanwhile, has been quietly solid.

2 – Swallows are the only team yet to concede a home goal since the World Cup break.

Richards Bay v Kaizer Chiefs

Richards Bay would have long marketed Kaizer Chiefs at home as their biggest game of the season. Unfortunately, they come into it in less than stellar form. In fact, one could even say they come in relegation form. No team has picked up fewer points since the start of the year than the Rich Boyz of Natal (5, level with Chippa & bottom Marumo Gallants). Yet, Chiefs’ record in KZN and the unconvincing win in the Soweto derby may give the hosts some confidence.

1 – Chiefs have won just one of their last five away league games to KZN opponents, losing each of the other four.

Stellenbosch v Mamelodi Sundowns

Stellenbosch are in rare form, enjoying its best run of results in almost five years. Yet, they face the sternest test this weekend, as the champions are in town. They remain one of only six local teams that have beat Sundowns post-Pitso Mosimane, so at least they have the experience and know-how of getting a result against this machine. Sundowns themselves may need to make some changes, having travelled to Cameroon, Egypt, and Bloemfontein in the last two weeks. And a shaky defence may provide hope for their hosts.

Maritzburg United v Cape Town City

Back-to-back clean sheets have led to back-to-back wins for Eric Tinkler’s side. And perhaps that is part of the reason why the bookies make them favourites here. One has to go back to May 2017 for the last time Maritzburg beat City at home, but that was also a Fadlu Davids against Eric Tinkler game which ended 1-0 to the former. He’ll do anything for the same result this weekend, particularly given their present struggles (no win in five) and the fact their last home clean sheet came in September.

1,5 – City concedes on average 1,5 goals a game at home this season (15 in 10), the worst ratio of all teams in the division.
