Carling knockout

The quarter-finals of the 2024 Carling Knockout take place this weekend, with a marquee matchup between Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns headlining the four fixtures. Richards Bay hosts Cape Town City on Friday, aiming for back-to-back semi-finals in the competition. On Sunday, last season’s runners-up TS Galaxy will face giant-killers Magesi FC, while Stellies and Marumo will meet again after their league clash on Thursday. Here’s a preview of the weekend games.

Quarter-Final 1: Richards Bay vs. Cape Town City

Both teams are looking to bounce back after losses in their most recent league matches. Last year’s semi-finalists Richards Bay fell 2-0 to Sekhukhune, while City suffered a 3-0 defeat to Sundowns. City has historically dominated this fixture, winning three of the four meetings between these sides. However, their away form has been inconsistent, with only two wins from 11 road trips this year (D5, L4). Meanwhile, Richards Bay has become quite resilient at home.

1/10 – Richards Bay has lost only one of their last ten home games, with eight wins and one draw across all competitions.

Quarter-Final 2: Kaizer Chiefs vs. Sundowns

The form guide may favor Sundowns, who have won eight of their last nine games. Chiefs have had mixed results recently, with three wins, one draw, and two losses. However, form can often be unreliable in cup competitions. These teams met in the league just a few weeks ago, with Sundowns coming from behind to win 2-1.

In a simulated 100-match scenario, Chiefs would win 60% of the time based on the quality of chances created (with a 2-1 Chiefs win being the most probable outcome). However, Sundowns’ clinical finishing and a Man of the Match performance from their goalkeeper proved decisive. They’ll need both factors to work in their favor again, despite recent history being on their side.

0 – Sundowns are unbeaten in 10 games against Chiefs, with seven wins and three draws since April 2021.

Quarter-Final 3: TS Galaxy vs. Magesi

TS Galaxy reached the final of this competition last season, but they have struggled this season, currently sitting at the bottom of the league with just one point from five games. Galaxy reached the quarter-finals through extra time and are the only remaining team yet to score a goal in regulation time. Despite dominating possession (2nd in the league) and box touches (3rd in the league), they have only scored twice. Magesi’s defensive style may suit Galaxy, providing an opportunity to turn their season around.

9 – Galaxy has managed just nine shots on target in the league, the fewest among all teams.

Quarter-Final 4: Marumo vs. Stellenbosch

Three days after their league encounter, Stellenbosch and Marumo Gallants meet again, this time in the Carling Cup. Marumo won the league clash 1-0 with a late goal. Now, both teams must travel again for the cup tie, though the quick turnaround could benefit the home side. Gallants have been strong at home, with just one loss in six matches since April and an unbeaten record against Stellies when hosting (W2, D1). Low-scoring games have been typical in this fixture, with five of their last six meetings featuring under 1.5 goals.

0 – Stellies are unbeaten in seven away games this season (W4, D3, L0).
