Orlando Pirates return to league action against Supersport United fresh from a 5-0 aggregate win over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-finals.
Pirates Defence
Keeping a clean sheet against a toothless Kaizer Chiefs may not be difficult nowadays, but it’s not something to be sniffed at. We’ve mentioned Pirates’ remarkable defensive record before, so it’s worth reiterating that Supersport have their work cut out on Saturday.
1 – In the twenty league games since Josef Zinnbuaer’s first game at Pirates in December 2019, no team has managed to score more than once against Pirates in a league match.
Possible Bet: Supersport to score under 0.5 goals at 2.30
History Says Goals
With Teboho Mokoena and Bradley Grobler on song, could Matsatsantsa be the side that breaks that record? There’s been a goal in every league match involving Supersport this year. You have to go back to November 2019 to find a goalless draw featuring Supersport. We expect some goals.
2 – In the 52 league games involving Supersport since December 2018, only two have finished without a goal.
Indeed, this will be the 49th clash between the two sides since the PSL was established in 1996, making it the joint most played fixture in PSL history (Chiefs v Sundowns also played 49). There have been 114 goals scored in the Pirates-Supersport fixture since the PSL started in 1996, the second highest scoring fixture in PSL history.
Possible Bet: Over 2.5 goals at 2.60
JZ Must Make History
While Zinnbauer has already beaten Supersport in the league (2-1 in August 2020), Kostadin Papic was the last Pirates coach to win more than one league game against Supersport while in the Buccaneers hot seat (2004 & 2006). In the PSL era, no Pirates coach has beaten Supersport twice in the league in the same calendar year. To win, Zinnbauer will have to do something no Pirates coach has ever done.
Possible Bet: Supersport win/draw at 1.62
