League leaders Sundowns host Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, looking to both extend their unbeaten record and put some breathing space between them and their challengers at the top of the table. If AmaZulu win on Saturday against TTM, they could end up just three points behind the leaders before Sundowns take to the field on Sunday afternoon. We put together some numbers for you ahead of the biggest clash of the weekend.
This will be the 50th league meeting between the two sides since 1996, making it the joint-most played fixture in the PSL era. While history favors Chiefs (no team has won as many games against Sundowns than them – W20 D14 L15), the present certainly looks better for The Brazilians. Not only are Sundowns 22 points ahead, but the gulf between the two sides could be further underlined this weekend. If Chiefs fail to win against Sundowns, it will become mathematically impossible for Chiefs to catch Sundowns in the league.
21 – Sundowns are unbeaten in 21 league games this season (23 overall since the end of last season) – the longest unbeaten run from the start of a season in PSL history.
Recent results against Pirates, Wydad AC and Horoya show that writing Chiefs off could be a misjudgement. In the games that really matter, Hunt’s troops tend to show up and they will be motivated by knowing that Sundowns have never completed a league double over Chiefs in PSL history. They would not want to be the first. In fact, Chiefs are one of four teams that have won more league games (20) than they have lost against Sundowns (15). With one eye on invincibility, there is always the possibility that Sundowns may be more afraid to lose the remainder of their games and play with the handbrake on.
Downs have won the last two games against Chiefs – the last more convincing than the first, 1-0 and then 3-0. Yet, the recent games against AmaZulu & TTM (both 0-0) showed that Sundowns can be stopped – they finished the AmaZulu match with just two shots on target.
3 – Sundowns have never won three successive games against Chiefs in the PSL era.
It is rare to see Sundowns failing to score in this one, especially when you consider that they are at home. Since firing blanks against TTM in the opening home game of the season, Sundowns have failed to score just once in nine home games since then. A leaky Chiefs defence with three clean sheets in 10 away games this season may be ripe for the picking.
In addition, Sundowns have scored Over 1.5 in six of their last eight league games – the exceptions being AmaZulu (0-0) and Black Leopards (1-1).
2 – Chiefs have kept just two clean sheets in the last 10 league games in this fixture.
Sundowns are one of two teams (alongside Pirates) to have scored 50% of their goals in the first half and 50% of their goals in the second. However, with Chiefs, the action seems to come in the second half on both ends of the pitch. Chiefs have scored 74% of their goals in the second half (17/23) – the highest proportion of all sides. They have also conceded just 31% of their goals in the first half (8/26) – only Baroka (20%) concede less before the break. As the jammed season, draws to an end, second-half goals may start to be on the increase.
