The games are coming thick and fast in the South African Premiership as we reach the sixth round of matches in the competition. Orlando Pirates’ win on Tuesday night guarantees them the top spot until at least the end of November, making them the team to catch. Wednesday sees Sundowns hosting Cape Town City, aiming to keep pace with the leaders—a rare position for them in recent seasons. Chiefs are also looking for a morale-boosting result against Magesi, who have shown resilience in recent games. Meanwhile, SuperSport hopes to secure consecutive league wins for the first time in ages. Our Betting Guide provides context for these selected games.

Magesi v Kaizer Chiefs

When the fixtures were first announced, Chiefs fans likely circled this as an early-season three-pointer. But after Magesi knocked Pirates out of the Carling Cup last week, those expectations may need adjusting. According to the odds, however, an upset still looks unlikely, with the hosts given only a 20% chance of winning. Chiefs have lost just one of their last nine games against newly promoted teams (against Spurs last season) and will be confident against an attack that has the fewest shots on target in the league (less than 2 per game) and the fewest big chances created (just one in five games). That said, both teams to score at 2/1 could be worth a look given Chiefs’ defensive struggle.

2 – This is the first time in PSL history that Chiefs have gone without a clean sheet in each of their first four league games of the season.

Sundowns v Cape Town City

It’s an important week for Sundowns, who suffered their first away defeat in two years over the weekend. They host Cape Town City midweek, then face Kaizer Chiefs in a high-stakes Carling Knockout quarter-final. With one eye on the Cup tie, Manqoba Mngqithi may be tempted to rotate the squad. Downs have already used 30 players this season, more than any other side. City may have won this fixture dramatically on the final day of last season, but their away from remains poor, despite that result. This matchup has been low scoring, with the last six meetings yielding 1, 0, 0, 2, 0, and 0 goals.

1 – Cape Town City have won just one away league game in 2024, drawing four and losing the other two.

Golden Arrows v SuperSport

If you’re considering going against the odds this week, this game could be the one. Gavin Hunt’s side defeated Chiefs over the weekend but hasn’t won consecutive league games this year. They’ve also lost all three of their away games this season without scoring and sit bottom of the away league table (i.e., based only on away games). However, Arrows are no easy challenge at home—they’ve lost only once in eight home games. That said, many of these matches have ended in draws (5 of 8), so another shared result may be on the cards.

1 – This is SuperSport’s 10th trip to Golden Arrows since September 2016, with only one win in that span (P9 W1 D3 L5 across all competitions).
