If the first few games of 2022 are anything to go by, the low scoring nature of the 2021/22 season looks set to continue until the end. There’ve been 285 goals scored so far, in 147 games, the lowest at this stage of a season in PSL history. With many sides focused on CAF commitments, we dug through the numbers to see if there were any signs of goals in the few fixtures lined up for this weekend.
Saturday
Chippa Utd v Royal AM
Kurt Lentjies will take charge of his 10th game since Gavin Hunt was (first) suspended. With just two wins to his name, it is fair to say the coaching role has been a steep learning curve. As it stands, Chippa are perched rather uncomfortably close to the relegation zone and could be sucked further down by the end of the weekend. They host a Royal AM side that is mixing it with the big boys at the top. Most of that is thanks to their home form, however, where only Sundowns (32) have more points at home than Royal AM (23).
6 – Royal AM have won just one away game all season. Only Baroka & TS Galaxy (both 0 wins) have less.
Suggested Bet: Under 2.5 goals
Swallows v TS Galaxy
Swallows needed a very late goal to salvage a point during the week against Stellenbosch to continue what is now a 4-game scoring streak in the league (5 in all competitions) for the league’s lowest scorers. The results are yet to follow the goals, however, with one win in 18 league games since the opening day triumph over disjointed Royal AM. They host a side with a miserable record away from home and will be optimistic for a positive result here.
1 – TS Galaxy have won just one point on the road this season – the fewest of all sides.
Suggested Bet: Swallows to win/draw
Suggested Bet: Under 2.5 goals
Sunday
Arrows v CT City
For any side in the league, one win away from home when the league is in the second half of the campaign is disappointing. For a side of Cape Town City’s calibre, it borders on embarrassing. They scored twice in their last away game of the year, but still ended on the losing side (Supersport won). That is something so rare, it has happened only six times in City’s six top-flight seasons. Now they must pick themselves up and deliver on the road again. Despite never scoring Over 0.5 in successive away games under Tinkler, this could be the tie that breaks that duck
7 – Seven goals were scored in the last fixture between the sides, the highest-scoring fixture in the PSL this season.
