Betting Notebook: PSL Matchday 20

Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs is the headline fixture of the Matchday 20 of the PSL weekend, as two of South Africa’s heavyweights clash on Saturday afternoon. The Brazilians have taken a mammoth 15-point lead at the top of the table but have played four more games than Pirates, who in turn will be looking to stay in touch at the top. The race for the final CAF spot is even more exciting – just six points separate six teams between 3rd and 8th. Our Betting Notebook is a statistical preview of the weekend.

Mamelodi Sundowns (1st) vs. Kaizer Chiefs (8th)

February was a brilliant month for Miguel Cardoso’s Sundowns, who broke a PSL record for goals scored in a calendar month, netting 22 across six league games. They’ll be aiming to continue in that scoring vein when they take on a Chiefs side that has shipped 23 already this season and has the fewest clean sheets across the division (3). Chiefs are coming off a 4-1 hammering last week and have not beaten Sundowns in 11 games now, so 1.5/1 odds for the win look fair. It’s the goals market that could be fruitful, given Sundowns’ own defensive lapses.

5 – Sundowns have conceded at least once in each of their last five games, their longest run without a clean sheet in five years.

You can bet on Over 3.5 goals

Marumo Gallants (14th) vs Orlando Pirates (2nd)

One win in five has resulted in coaching changes at Marumo Gallants as they bid to avoid relegation once again. Their overall form has been sketchy, but at home, they have been a tough place for many teams. Only Sundowns (twice) and Kaizer Chiefs (once) have won in Bloemfontein across 11 games this season, and all those games were either level or 1-goal margins until the final 10 minutes. The Buccaneers remain strong favorites, however, and that has a lot to do with the head-to-head history in this tie. The 8-1 win in December is probably the most notorious result, but it’s been one-sided for a while.

0 – Orlando Pirates have never lost a game against Marumo Gallants (P8 W5 D3 L0)

You can bet on a Pirates win or draw
You can bet on both teams to score

AmaZulu (6th) v Cape Town City (10th)

Everyone was raving about Cape Town City when they beat Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the same week at the start of the year. But since then, they have won one in eight and are now on a six-game winless run across all competitions. AmaZulu (43% chance of victory) are slightly favoured by the odds for this one over City (30%) and can complete a second successive league double over the Citizens with a win. If the last half-decade is anything to go by, the home team will be licking their lips.

9 – City have lost more league games against AmaZulu than they have against any other side (P15 W2 D4 L9)

You can bet on an AmaZulu win or draw
You can bet on Under 2.5 goals
