Betting Guide: PSL Final Weekend

With Pirate’s involvement in CAF football and the rigid fixture schedule creating many uncertainties around CAF qualifications (postponed games etc), only a win will suffice for the teams that are chasing the Top 3. We combed through the numbers as usual to bring you a betting guide.

Kaizer Chiefs (4th) v Swallows (15th)

Chiefs produced one of their best performances of the season in the return leg, cruising to 3-0 with less than an hour on the clock. They are finding some form under Zwane following a horrible April and will want to end the season on a high. On the other hand, Swallows are struggling, having collected just 7 of the last 24 available points. They kept a rare clean sheet in the game against Chippa, but haven’t kept back-to-back clean sheets since November.

1 – Chiefs have lost just one of their last 5 home games played on the final day of the season, winning three and drawing one since 2010.

AmaZulu (6th) v Golden Arrows (9th)

The fixture computer has thrown a KZN derby to end the season for these two sides, and it is hard to call. Arrows are hunting for a Top8 spot and probably need the win more. Their hosts are in the luxury zone of having qualified for Top8 but too far away for a CAF spot. This one is hard to call – games involving Arrows usually see lots of goals, with a league-high 16 matches seeing both sides score when they are involved. Having said that, Arrows have blanked in six of their last eight games, so another Under 0.5 could be in store. Plus, AmaZulu are on a run of six consecutive clean sheets in the PSL, equalling the club’s best-ever run in a PSL top-flight season.

0 – AmaZulu are unbeaten at home all season, and could end the season without a home defeat for the first time.

Yet, they haven’t scored Over 1.5 goals since Truter took charge (6 games).

Royal AM (3rd) v Mamelodi Sundowns (1st)

The champions were alarming against Stellenbosch last weekend, with an error-strewn performance that was punished by their visitors. Not only did Downs miss the chance to finish the season with an unbeaten home record, they spoiled the self-titled ‘homecoming’, which was meant to be a farewell in front of fans. A trophy handover is scheduled for this weekend, and they wouldn’t want to see another party spoilt. They’ve just recently beaten Royal AM in the Cup, but this could be the hardest away game they will face all campaign.

30 – Sundowns (36) are the only side that has won more points at home than Royal AM (30).

Stellenbosch (5th) v Cape Town City (2nd)

Another final day derby, but one which could have massive ramifications for the city of Cape Town. Stellies still harbour slim hopes at CAF qualification, while City almost have that in their hands. The hosts looked sharp when dismantling Sundowns 3-0 on the weekend, so City would have heeded the warning. As if they need it. The reverse leg also saw Stellies romp to a similar 3-0 win, but they’ll now have to stop the league’s form side, whose keeper is also in contention for the Golden Glove.

13 – City are unbeaten in 13 league matches, their best run in the top-flight. It is also the 2nd best upbeat run of all sides this season, behind Sundowns’ 17-game streak.
