A statistical summary of PSL teams’ weekends

CAF football was the main order of this past weekend, featuring massive wins for South African clubs on the continent.

The PSL also had four games across the weekend, with wins for Golden Arrows, Sekhukhune, AmaZulu, and Marumo Gallants.

Yet, it was a difficult weekend for Magesi, SuperSport, Cape Town City, and Chiefs, who found themselves on the receiving end of some bad results. Winners & Losers is a statistical wrap of the weekend action.

Winners

Orlando Pirates

Through to the CAF Champions League Last 8 for the first time since 2013. Jose Riveiro and his swashbuckling Buccaneers will be happy with their continental performance this season.

The Buccaneers were drawn into a tough group, but they have navigated that well. As of now, no team in the competition has won more points at home than Pirates (7), while they are one of only two teams unbeaten in the competition.

5 – This is the fifth time Pirates have reached the Last 8 of the African Cup/CAF Champions League (also 1995, 1996, 2006, 2013).

Stellenbosch CAF adventure

A first CAF participation and they are already through to the quarter-finals. Their league form has been off lately (one win in five), but on the continent, they are a different proposition.

3 – Having lost their opening two Group games, Stellenbosch has won each of their last three.

Sundowns’ fighting spirit

Defeat would not have been fatal to their campaign, but it would brought unnecessary complications and permutations. As it stands, they need only a draw to guarantee progress to the next stage, thanks to an unlikely feat.

1 – This was the first time Sundowns won a CAF away game despite conceding the first goal (W0 D7 L32 before then, since 1994).

AmaZulu

Usuthu’s journey under new management has been promising. In previous coach Franco’s final 18 games, the team won 14 points. In half the games under the duo, they have more (16). Over a season, this would translate to 53 points (1 behind their record season points total).

16 – Only Sundowns (18) have won more points than AmaZulu since Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi’s first league game at the club (16).

Golden Arrows

Up to 5th on the table, and enjoying life under new management. Yet, it’s a fixture they seem to enjoy lately, whoever the coach may be.

5 – Since the beginning of 2021, Golden Arrows have won more league games against Kaizer Chiefs than against any other side (5).

Sekhukhune

Since losing 3-0 to Sundowns at the end of November, the team has come full circle. Without the “distraction” of CAF football, they have coped well. Only Sundowns & Pirates have won more points since their CAF elimination in September. Recently, they also stand out.

15 – Sekhukhune has won 15 pts since the start of December, more than any other side.

Andy Boyeli

2024 was not easy for the Congolese forward, who notched just one goal in 10 matches. But 2025 has been the opposite. That’s four goals in two games, including yesterday’s hat-trick.

2 – Boyeli is only the second Congolese player to score a league hat-trick in PSL history, after Bunene Nganduane for Qwa Qwa Stars against Vaal Professionals in March 1998.

Losers

Kaizer Chiefs

Laying all the blame for Kaizer Chiefs’ problems on the players alleviates the coach’s responsibility. Likewise, pointing fingers at the coach absolves the players of responsibility. The truth is somewhere in between. Chiefs winning back-to-back games just once this year points to long-standing problems beyond the current coach.

1 – Chiefs had one shot on target vs Arrows, their joint-fewest in a league game this season.

SuperSport United

Like Chiefs, SuperSport have won back-to-back games just once this year. While Chiefs’ issues lie in clean sheets, Gavin Hunt’s side are struggling to score.

5 – Five goals from 13 games represent United’s worst-ever goalscoring start to a season

Experienced minds

Defeats for Gavin Hunt, Muhsin Ertugral, Owen Da Gama, and Nasreddine Nabi. Their combined age is 247 years.
