DSTV Premiership

The Soweto derby is the biggest local game on everyone’s minds this weekend, but seven games were played in the DSTV Premiership during the week. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates both won their games ahead of the derby, but there were notable results for Cape Town City, Stellenbosch, Royal AM, and Swallows FC. Along the way Luke Baartman and Khanyisa Mayo also had a week to remember. Here are 10 stats from the midweek PSL action, with a lot of praise for Khanyisa Mayo.

Mayo Becomes City’s Top Scorer/span>

24 – Khanyisa Mayo’s goal against Chippa United was his 24th goal for Cape Town City (22 in the league, 2 in Cups), making him the outright top scorer for the Cape side since their (re)formation in 2016.

Pirates Binary Record Continues

1 – Orlando Pirates have not scored more than one open-play goal in any of their last 11 games across all competitions. Open-play goal record since 17 September: 0-0-0-1-0-1-0-1-1-0-1

Tinkler’s Team Back On Form

4 – Cape Town City have now won four consecutive league games, equalling their best-ever run in the top flight. They’ve done similar 4-game winning streaks in 2016, and 2022 and this is their second one in 2023, with all four coming under Eric Tinkler.

Luke Baartman Becomes The Second Youngest Player To Score Against Chiefs

17 – Luke Baartman (17y4m18d) is the second youngest player to score a goal in the league this season, after Siyabonga Mabena (16y7m9d). He is also the 2nd youngest player to score a goal against Kaizer Chiefs after Gareth Devine who scored for Wits v Chiefs aged 17y4m2d in August 1998.

Spurs Struggles Continue

3 – Cape Town Spurs have reached the 10-game mark with just three points to their name. Only one team in PSL history (2003/04 Hellenic) had fewer points after 10 games (2), and they ended the season in 15th.

Rayners Continues To Shine For Stellies

4 – This was Iqraam Rayners’ 4th brace of 2023. Of the 11 braces scored by Stellenbosch players since their 2019 promotion, Rayners has got five of them alone.

Khune Finally Breaks His hoodoo

1 – The 3-2 win over Spurs is the first game that Itumeleng Khune has started this year and not ended on the losing side, having lost each of the previous eight games he started across competitions in 2023.
