10 Stats From Sundowns Ladies CAF Champions League Triumph

Sundowns Ladies were crowned African champions for a second time last night, beating a talented SC Casablanca 3-0 in the final.

Sundowns

Sundowns Ladies were crowned African champions for a second time last night, beating a talented SC Casablanca 3-0 in the final. It was a stylish and dominant display against the Moroccan side, who created enough chances and probably deserved at least one goal. However, Andile Dlamini was in inspired form in goals, making some crucial saves to keep the opponents at bay. The tournament is in its third edition, and there is enough to dig into and extract 10 interesting stats to celebrate the new African champions.

Downs Dominate The Continent

2 – This was Sundowns Ladies’ second CAF Women’s Champions League title, following their triumph at the inaugural tournament in 2021. Two titles are also more than any other African club side (3 tournaments played overall, ASFAR Club of Morocco won the other, beating Sundowns in the 2022 final).

2 – Sundowns Ladies are only the second team to win all their games in a single CAF Women’s Champions League campaign (after ASFAR Club in 2022).

Goals Galore

41 – 41 goals were scored at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League, a new record for total goals scored at the tournament

  • 40 in 2021
  • 39 in 2022
  • 41 in 2023

25 – Boitumelo Rabale’s first-half goal was the 25th goal scored by Sundowns Ladies at the CAF Women’s Champions League, the first team to reach 25 goals at the finals. They have scored 26 goals altogether (4 goals in 2021, 12 goals in 2022 & 10 goals in 2023).

A Superstar Spearheading The Attack

1 – Refilwe Tholakele is the first Botswana-born player to score a goal at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

5 – Ultimately, she ended the tournament as the leading scorer at the tournament with five goals. Only AS FAR’s Ibtissam Jraïdi (6 goals in 2022) has ever scored more at a single edition.

5 – Five goals is the most ever scored by a Sundowns Ladies player in a single CAFWCL edition, beating the four goals scored by Lelona Daweti in the 2022 campaign.

A Strong Defence

0 – Sundowns Ladies won the Women’s Champions League without conceding a goal, and with an aggregate score of 10-0. It’s the second time they have done this, having also won the 2021 title without conceding (4-0 aggregate then).

2 – Andile Dlamini has won her second #CAFWCL Goalkeeper of the Tournament award (also 2021), while, she is only the second keeper to keep four clean sheets at a single #CAFWCL finals (after AS Far’s Khadija Er-Rmichi in 2022).

Just Rewards

4 – Sundowns Ladies won all four major awards at the tournament

  • Best Player (Boitumelo Rabale)
  • Top Scorer (Refilwe Tholakele)
  • Best Keeper (Andile Dlamini)
  • Fairplay award.

This is the first time one team has won all four awards at the tournament.

Congratulations Sundowns!!
