PSL fixture is getting more interesting, with a full round of matches scheduled across Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We’ve picked half of those and tried to dissect them, with a betting guide that may be worth your time.

Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg United

A Pirates home win is the lowest set of odds for any match in the PSL this weekend at 1.7/1 and that looks like a banker. This is despite the absence of Jose Riveiro on the touchline and despite the Buccaneers losing to this same Maritzburg side a few months back. With one loss in five and an 11-goal return in that time, something is starting to click for the Sea Robbers’ attack. They average 11 shots a game post-World Cup, a significant jump from the 7-shot-a-game team we saw in the same number of games pre-World Cup.

0 – Maritzburg have never completed a double over Orlando Pirates in the league.

Royal AM v SuperSport United

The two teams had contrasting fortunes in the Cup over the weekend and will have different motivations coming into this one. Royal AM progressed from a tough away trip to Cape Town City, while SuperSport were humbled by lower league side Dondol FC. It’s probably not a trip Gavin Hunt is relishing given that his team have won one of their last four away games since the World Cup break. But it’s a trip John Maduka will savour – against no other side has he won more often than the four wins v SuperSport. Both defences look a bit suspect at the moment, so there could be some goals.

1 – SuperSport have won one of their last eight league games away to KZN based opposition (D1 L6).

Kaizer Chiefs v Golden Arrows

It was only last season that Golden Arrows completed a league double over Chiefs. Now, Arrows could be sucked into the relegation zone by the end of this weekend. There will be huge pressure on them to get a result similar to last season, but the odds favour a home win for many factors – one of them being Arrows’ away form. In the last 12 months, Arrows have played 15 away games and all their wins (except one) were “away” to KZN sides.  But what’s that one non-KZN away win – Chiefs.

10 – Arrows have lost more matches than any other side this season (10).

Cape Town City v Swallows

For large parts of the season, Cape Town City’s inconsistent results were seen as the culmination of misfortune in front of the goal. The data backed that up too. But as the season enters its final third and City is still struggling to build a consistent run, that narrative may not hold. City have won seven games all season across four competitions, and the Cup knockout was a further blow. Only a sustained league run can save the campaign, and a visit by the divisions’ worst travellers will be met with glee.

1 – Swallows are the only team yet to win away from home this season (P9 W0 D4 L5), last winning on the road in February 2022.
