Premier League Round-Up: Talking Points

We look at the main talking points from this past weekend’s Premier League action as the end of the 2022/23 edges closer.

Premier League Main Points

After a week full of Premier League action, there was plenty to comb through considering 2 matchdays were squashed into one week as the end is near for the current season. Bet Central explores the main talking points.

Manchester City Ascend To The Summit

Man City have not been at the summit of the Premier League table since February, but on Sunday after a hard-fought win against Fulham, they assumed the top spot leading Arsenal by a single point with 76 points to the Gunners’ 75.

This comes after they initially beat Arsenal 4-1 in the midweek top-of-the-table clash, the league is now City’s to lose as they still have a game in hand on top of the point lead on the log. If they win all their remaining games, they will make it a hattrick of consecutive Premier League titles.

Aston Villa Finally Beaten

Unai Emery’s great run with Aston Villa came to an abrupt end on Sunday as they were beaten by a determined Man United team. United put on their best performance in a while after looking off their best in the last couple of weeks and managed to end the Villans’ 10-match unbeaten run

For Aston Villa, it meant they drop out of the top 6 with Liverpool winning their game, but they could still get a top 6 finish with Spurs struggling for form and Liverpool marred by their inconsistent performances in the Premier League this season.

Tottenham-Liverpool Plays Out 7 goal Thriller

Spurs looked dead and buried as Mo Salah dispatched a 15th-minute penalty past Fraser Forster to make it 3-0 when not even a third of the match had been played, the signs were ominous for Spurs, would there be a repeat of the Newcastle humiliation?

A 40th-minute goal from captain Harry Kane gave his side a glimmer of hope for the 2nd half and Spurs fought back with Richarlison equalising 3 minutes into stoppage time. Just when Ryan Mason’s team thought they had salvaged a point Diogo Jota broke their hearts by getting the winning goal for Liverpool a minute late. A game of 2 halves which thrilled the neutral spectator.

Erling Haaland Becomes Premier League Royalty

In their victory over Fulham, Man City got a penalty which was coolly slotted in by their young striker, Erling Haaland, who is now surely destined for greatness after taking to Premier League life like a duck to water and has now scored an astonishing 50 goals in all competition for the Cityzens in his 1st season.

He became the 1st player since 1931 to score 50 goals in the English top-flight, added to that he equalled Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s 34 goals in a single Premier League season and is poised to go past the duo over the remaining fixtures in the league.

Brighton Shines Brighter

It was doom and gloom when Graham Potter left Brighton for Chelsea late last year, most thought that Brighton might fall apart and as has now become clear, Brighton astutely hired Roberto De Zerbi and the Italian has made Brighton even better than during the Potter era.

It was evident in their resounding victory over Wolves putting 6 past Julien Lopetegui’s men in a statement win, what makes the victory even more impressive is the fact that De Zerbi opted to rest some of his frontline personnel like Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Alister. De Zerbi has built a formidable team.
