2022/23 La Liga Team of the Season

Following the end of an exhilarating 2022/23 La Liga campaign, Bet Central has picked 11 standout performers for the Team of the Season.

FC Barcelona were confirmed victors of the league with four games to spare. They dominate the line-up with four stars. Meanwhile, three from their arch-rivals Real Madrid made the cut.

Here’s our best 11 for the season: 

GK: Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona)

Labelled by his coach Xavi Hernandez as the “World’s best”, Stegen had the best campaign of his career since joining Barca in 2014. The German shot-stopper reached a milestone, eclipsing Claudio Bravo’s clean-sheet record of 23 games in a single La Liga season.

The 31-year-old recorded 26 incredible shut-outs in 38 league games. In the last line of Blaugrana’s solid defence, Stegen worked magic to steer the side to La Liga success.

LB: Alejandro Balde (Barcelona)

The La Masia product only emerged at the beginning of the season full of energy and was too good to sit on the bench.

He left Xavi no choice but to overlook his former teammate Jordi Alba for most of the campaign.

Balde wrapped his first season in La Liga with one goal and six assists having featured in 33 games in the league.

CB: Éder Militão (Real Madrid)

The Brazilian hard tackler availed himself once again this season when he was needed the most. 

Composure and positional awareness are the best attributes he has displayed constantly since joining Real from Porto in 2019. 

The centre-back was also lethal in front of goal, scoring five goals and providing one assist in 33 outings.

CB: Ronald Raújo (Barcelona)

Having been promoted from FC Barcelona B to the first team in 2020, the Uruguayan has kept his nose to the grindstone all along to earn Barca fans’ trust.

This season, he took over the leading role at the back from the club’s legend Gerard Piqué who waved goodbye to Camp Nou in the midseason.

Araújo was also key in the astonishing 26 clean sheets the club kept in the league.

RB: Nahuel Molina (Atlético Madrid)

Following his €20 million switch from Udinese to Atletico, Molina got off to a rocky start in Spain but gained confidence at a later stage. He’s been key in the offensive game of Diego Simeone’s side.

Being of help to Argentina’s FIFA World Cup triumph also inspirited the 25-year-old. Molina returned from Qatar and became a vital cog in the Atleti’s structure.

CM: Gabri Veiga (Celta Vigo)

Veiga’s biggest highlight of the season is surely a brace that inspired his side to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in their last match of the league. Celta Vigo are still in the top-flight thanks to the 21-year-old. 

Apart from the last day of the 2022/23 season, Veiga was alive the whole campaign. It’s no surprise he’s one of the main subjects of speculation ahead of the Summer transfer window in Europe.

CM: Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)

Despite La Liga and UEFA Champions League failures, the Uruguayan midfielder was integral in most of Real’s victories this season. 

Apart from being known for his abilities to unleash long rangers, Valverde has grown to be a rare complete midfielder having improved his attacking aspect.

In 34 league games he played this season, he scored seven goals and provided four assists.

CM: Pedri (Barcelona)

The 2021 Golden Boy winner was nothing short of spectacular. He was a breathing machine again for Xavi’s side this past season.

The midfield magician is known for his crucial role in the build-up and in making the team play. Many, including his coach Xavi, have likened him to Andres Iniesta. It is believed they have similar game style.

If we’re yet to see his best, then Barca has one of the best-ever midfielders at their disposal.

LF: Vinicius Jr. (Real Madrid)

The Brazilian winger was one of the mainstays of Los Blancos, giving defenders nightmares as always.

The club’s dependency on Vini was more pronounced in some of the games. When he had a bad day at the office, Carlo Ancelotti’s side would also appear struggling offensively.

The 22-year-old made 20 goal contributions in 33 league games, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.

RF: Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

Just like his teammate Molina, Griezmann didn’t have a good start to the 2022/23 season. He rarely started for Simeone’s side but had a turnaround later in the campaign.

He took his 2022 FIFA World Cup’s impressive displays into domestic matters, helping Atleti pick up the form in the second round.

The Frenchman made 32 goal contributions in La Liga, rattling the back of the net on 15 occasions and providing 17 assists.

CF: Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona)

In his very first season in La Liga, Lewandowski claimed the Pichichi award after scoring 23 goals in 34 outings. The 34-year-old also provided seven assists in the process. 

Lewandowski looked like he had been in La Liga for years, wasting no time to settle in. He promises to be all-important for Xavi’s side again next season.
