Euro 2020 got off to a blistering start in the group stages as we saw plenty of twists and turns, while we also got to witness Cristiano Ronaldo break a few more records. Now, with just 16 teams left in the competition, the business end of the tournament will finally get underway this weekend as we take a look at some of our best outright selections on offer.
Euro 2020 – Young Player of the Tournament
At the moment, this award seems like it can go to one player only, and that person is Germany’s Kai Havertz (3.00). But, as we all know, football is a strange sport, so nothing is set in stone just yet. Havertz has been Germany’s go-to attacker in the tournament so far, netting twice for the 2014 world champions, while the Chelsea maestro has also played a hand in some of the own goals conceded against Germany this tournament.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (5.00) would be Havertz’s closest competitor for the award, who, surprisingly was subbed off in Italy’s final group game against Wales, where Roberto Mancini’s side continued their superb run of clean sheets.
Donnarumma is yet to concede a goal in the tournament so far. Italy has a fairly favourable tie against Austria in the Round of 16, so perhaps another opportunity lies ahead for the 22-year-old shot-stopper to shine make his mark in goals for Italy.
Spain’s Pedri (6.00) finally showed up to the party in their last encounter, where they brushed Slovakia aside, winning 5-0. The Barcelona teenager has undoubtedly been Spain’s brightest star and has definitely taken the European stage by storm. His trickery in the centre of the park and ability to find a teammate puts him a cut above most, and as crazy as it may seem, much of Spain’s chances in the Euros are relied on how well Pedri performs.
England have one of the most youthful teams in the tournament and it would be cruel to leave out some of their players when looking at potential candidates to win the Young Player of the Tournament award. Bukayo Saka (16.00) played exceptionally well for the Three Lions in their last encounter, where they beat the Czech Republic 1-0.
Saka runs up and down the right flank, proving to be just as useful in defence as he is in attack. The 19-year-old Arsenal prodigy was rewarded with his impressive performance by picking up the Man of the Match accolade in England’s last game of the group stages.
