International tournaments rarely disappoint the public, and after we’ve given our outright picks for each group in the Euros, our attention turns to the more fun side of betting, where our minds get to go to war with our hearts over who will be the tournament’s top performers.
Euro 2020 – Top Goalscorer
Harry Kane (5.50)
Romelu Lukaku (6.50)
Kylian Mbappe (8.50)
Cristiano Ronaldo (11.00)
Karim Benzema (16.00)
Memphis Depay (18.00)
Bar & Better (20.00)
With England surprisingly being the bookmakers’ favourite to lift the Euro 2020 tournament taking place this month, it’s easy to see why Three Lions frontman Harry Kane is the red-hot favourite to be the tournament’s top scorer.
Kane comes off the back of a fantastic season with Tottenham, scoring 33 goals in 49 games across all tournaments, while also playing a part in his teammates’ goals as well, recording 17 assists. Personally, I still have my doubts. Not on Kane as a striker, but in the England national team fold.
Gareth Southgate is far too negative in his approach, and with one less midfielder in the team due to their five-man defence, Kane would almost have to rely on set-pieces to notch up his tally.
Romelu Lukaku had an amazing season as well, guiding Inter Milan to their first league title in over 10 years. For Belgium, though, it remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old marksman will be playing in his preferred role after often being utilized on the right flank, cutting in onto his favoured left foot.
On paper, Cristiano Ronaldo would be most punters’ pick for the Golden Boot award after claiming the prestigious accolade in Italy, already trumping one of his tournament rivals in Lukaku. Ronaldo has proven to be a goalscoring machine throughout his career with no stage ever being too big for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
If Portugal are to get as far as I’m expecting them to go, Ronaldo would definitely be well worth a punt, considering he’s also capable of netting a hat-trick in one of the games he features in, regardless of the opposition.
Karim Benzema’s situation at France will also be one to keep an eye out for. The Real Madrid superstar makes his return to the French national set-up after a six-year absence, and while the general consensus may be that Benzema will be the player to spearhead Les Bleus’ attack, Olivier Giroud has also been Didier Deschamps’ favourite, so caution needs to be taken when backing Benzema to bag the goals for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winners.
So, that leaves us with one unanswered question:
Who will win the Golden Boot?
It may seem a bit controversial and unpopular, but at a price of 33.00, Bruno Fernandes would be my selection. The Portuguese maestro has had a stellar spell at Manchester United, and followed up last season’s heroics with a 45-goal involvement in 58 games across all competitions for the Red Devils.
There is the slightest possibility that, as funny as it may seem, Fernandes could be on penalty duties as well for Portugal. There’s plenty of value around it and with Bruno likely to take some of the burden off Ronaldo for Portugal, it certainly can’t be ruled out.
