Premier League Round-Up: Talking Points

Matchday 35 of the Premier League was enthralling from start to finish – it ranged from teams snapping losing streaks, defensive revelations and a set of fixtures that averaged 7 goals a game. Bet Central brings you all the headlines.  

Erling Haaland, The Record Holder

In last week’s Premier League round-up, we spoke about Erling Haaland dining at the table of Premier League royals like Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, a few days later in a midweek game against West Ham he scored the goal that not only solidified his place at this table, but pushed him to the head of the table.

Erling Haaland, at the tender age of 22, now holds the Premier League record for most goals in a season in any era of English football. He has done so in his very 1^st season in the Premier League to add glitter to an-already glowing season for the Norwegian youngster. 

Chelsea Break Losing Streak

It wasn’t vintage Chelsea, but it was a far better performance from Chelsea than any of the last few weeks, they were able to string a few good plays together and got 3 points to get them out of the heat zone in the Premier League. Most importantly they snapped a 6-game losing streak.

It was Chelsea’s first win in almost 2 months and they gave a run to 3 January signings that haven’t played that much in Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile. The latter in particular looked assured at the back and maybe could secure a starting spot going into next season. Much better from Chelsea.

Arsenal’s Best Performance In Weeks

There was a barrage of attacks from Newcastle early on, but as soon as Arsenal weathered the early storm at St James’ Park, they took over and put on their best display in a number of weeks – the kind of performance that has seen them lead the pack for the bulk of the season before their unfortunate slump.

Granit Xhaka, Jorginho, Martin Odegaard and Jaku Kiwior, in particular, stood out for Arsenal. Defensively they looked the most stable since the injury to William Saliba and even if they don’t win the league, the fightback mentally will be encouraging for Mikel Arteta.

Scrap For Remaining European Spots

The fight for the remaining European spots on the table continued as no less than 6 clubs fight it out for the remaining 4 spots with Champions League football secured for both Arsenal and Man City. One more win for Newcastle in 3^rd position and they will be assured of European football in either competition.

Below them is a battle to the end between Liverpool, Man United and Tottenham Hotspurs with Aston Villa and Brighton just below them. Only Spurs and Liverpool won this past weekend with the rest all gaining no points, but there is a long way to go and a lot of factors to come into it, it is wide open.

Monday Mayhem

In one of the craziest set of Monday fixtures in recent times, there were 3 games featuring 4 of the bottom 5 teams and a whopping 21 goals were scored across those in a Monday filled with mayhem in the Premier League. Everton and Nottingham Forrest were able to propel themselves out of the drop zone.

Leicester City were well beaten by Fulham and dropped into the bottom 3 along with Leeds United. Everton thumped an on-form Brighton showing their determination to retain Premier League status next season. Southampton lost in a thrilling affair against Forrest who all, but consigned the Saints to relegation, if they fail to get a point in the next game, they will go down.
