Premier League Player of the Year Candidates and Betting Odds

This season has certainly been one of the most challenging and strangest seasons in a long time for many teams in England but that has not deterred the many talented players that grace our screens in the Premier League every week.

These are the seven players who have stood out so far this season

Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United

Since joining Manchester United in January of 2020, Bruno Fernandes has transformed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side from a team struggling to get into the Champions League to a team that could realistically challenge for the Premier League title.

He would most certainly win the award if it was just based on a calendar year, which was in 2020. This season, he has scored 16 goals in the league registering 10 assists which are outstanding numbers.

Harry Kane – Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane has been the Premier League’s standout centre forward this season with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Jamie Vardy and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also having excellent seasons, but there is no doubt that the England captain has been a cut above the rest.

This year we have seen him occasionally drop deeper to find himself in the number 10 position which has meant that he has not only scored goals but also provided more assists, most of them being for Son Heung-Min

It was not a surprise that Spurs dropped out of the Champions League places after he injured his ankle in a 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool earlier this year. He has scored 16 goals in the Premier League this season and also provided 13 assists.

Ilkay Gundogan – Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan has probably been the Premier League’s best player since the beginning of this year. He stepped up his game when Kevin De Bruyne suffered a hamstring injury in January and played a major role in City’s winning run of 21 games which was ended by Manchester United this past weekend

He has scored 11 goals this season which is a great return for a midfielder at this stage of the season.

Jack Grealish – Aston Villa

The Aston Villa captain is one of the most naturally gifted footballers in Europe right now and is a joy to watch. We’ve heard managers like David Moyes label him as the Premier League’s best player based on current form.

He’s played a pivotal role in Aston Villa’s outstanding season which sees them in ninth place, which is an exceptional achievement considering the fact that they survived on the final day of the last season. Aston Villa’s talisman has hit the back of the net six times this season and provided 10 assists.

Joao Cancelo – Manchester City

He is probably the most surprising candidate on this list but there is no doubt that Joao Cancelo has had a stellar campaign. The Portugese international has almost redefined the fullback position with his ability to move infield to help his side keep possession of the ball but also create chances. His versatility is invaluable to Manchester City with him being able to play on both sides as a fullback.

He has also improved a lot defensively, playing regularly for the team with the meanest defence in the league which makes him one of the best fullbacks in England.

Ruben Dias – Manchester City

Arguably the Premier League’s signing of the season, Ruben Dias, has improved City’s defence immensely having the same impact that Virgil van Dijk had when he joined Liverpool in 2018.

Only 23 years old, he has everything to become one of the best centre-backs in Premier League history. Manchester City have the league’s tightest defence only conceding 19 goals in 28 games with Dias and John Stones forming a formidable partnership at the heart of City’s defence.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Despite Liverpool’s surprisingly poor form in 2021 it is still hard to leave out the league’s leading goalscorer and the player who has won the golden boot twice in the last three seasons.

The Egyptian has 17 goals in the Premier League this season with his recent dip in form coinciding with Liverpool’s failure to create goal scoring opportunities since the turn of the year.
