Premier League: Dramatic League Finishes

With seven matches to go, the EPL title could go down to the wire. Let’s look at the Premier League’s most dramatic finishes over the years.

EPL Dramatic Finishes

Liverpool lead the Premier League title race with 76 points after their 4-0 hammering of Man Utd last night. Their title rivals, Man City will be looking to regain top spot when they face Brighton this evening. With seven matches to go, the EPL title could go down to the wire. Let’s look at the Premier League’s most dramatic finishes over the years.

2011/12 Season

The final day of the English Premier League in the 2011/12 season provided a dramatic ending. Heading into the final match, Manchester City and Manchester United were not both tied on 86 points from 37 matches. City was sitting on top of the table due to their superior 63 goal difference. Manchester City were facing Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium, giving them an amazing chance to win the title on home turf. Despite United claiming a win over Sunderland while waiting for the results at Etihad.

United were away in their own fixture, playing against Sunderland. There were short smiles for United at the end of the 90 minutes after hearing that City were trailing 2-1. But quick goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero ensured the Citizens claimed their first league title in 44 years.

2018/19 Season

Manchester City and Liverpool went toe to toe for the most part of the season with City finishing 98 points to 97 points to Liverpool. Both sides were incredible all season long. Manchester City held off a titanic challenge from Liverpool to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title by coming from behind to beat Brighton 4-1 on the final day.

A 14th straight league win ensured Pep Guardiola’s men pipped Liverpool by a solitary point as the Reds’ long wait to win the league continued despite a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Anfield that saw them post the third-highest points tally in Premier League history.

2008/09 Season

This marks the last season for Cristiano Ronaldo in the EPL before his record-breaking deal (at the time) to Real Madrid. During that season, Rafael Benitez, who was in charge of Liverpool got off to a wonderful start with his side leading the title race with seven points at one stage. But Manchester United managed to fight back and finish as league winners with 90 points – four points clear of the Reds.

Despite Liverpool recording only two losses away from home, the 28 matches won at home by United ensured that they walked away as the Champions. In that year, Nicholas Anelka won the Golden Boot award with his 19 goals. Nemanja Vidic was eventually crowned as the league’s best player.
