Everton face Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday.

David Moyes’ side have won their last three league matches, while the Reds can go nine points clear at the top of the table by winning this game in hand.

Match: Everton v Liverpool
When: Wednesday, 12 February 2025, 21:30
Where: Goodison Park

Everton Form

With The Toffees sitting 16th in the Premier League and just one point clear of the relegation zone, Sean Dyche was sacked. The change of coach came after a run of one win in 11 matches with four defeats and six draws. A 1-0 loss at Bournemouth with no shots on target was the final straw.

David Moyes returned to the club to replace Dyche. His first match in charge saw a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa before a 3-2 home win over Tottenham where they led 3-0 at half-time. A 1-0 win at Brighton followed with 31% possession and being outshot 16-3. After smashing Leicester 4-0, they deservedly lost 2-0 at home to Bournemouth in the FA Cup last weekend.

Everton Team News

Moyes is without first-choice striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Armando Broja and Dwight McNeil will also play no part in attacking areas. Central midfielder Orel Mangala is out for the season after knee surgery.

Everton will hope to have Vitalii Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson available at fullback. Seamus Coleman is out with a calf complaint. Ashley Young and Jake O’Brien are on standby to play at left and right back respectively whilst Beto will lead the line.

Everton Motivation

This is the final derby at Goodison Park so motivation from the crowd and the players will be very high. The Toffees will play for a win but a draw is also a great result.

Moyes does not care about possession and will look to set up in a low block with fast counters used.

Liverpool Form

Liverpool are six points clear at the top of the league. This match is their game to hand to extend that lead. Despite that, they have won just seven of their last 12 matches with some surprise defeats. After losing 1-0 to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, they won four of their next five matches with one draw, a 1-1 stalemate at Nottingham Forest.

A surprise 3-2 loss in the Champions League at PSV came with almost the entire best XI rested. They responded by winning 2-0 at Bournemouth in a somewhat fortunate result. A 4-0 demolition of Spurs followed to reach the Carabao Cup final as they put up 3.76 xG and 26 shots. Their last match saw a shock 1-0 loss at Plymouth in the FA Cup with a weakened team.

Liverpool Team News

Arne Slot is without Joe Gomez in defence but Trent Alexander-Arnold is back in training and could play some part in this fixture. His entire midfield were rested over the weekend and will return here.

The big decision is in attack. Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah are certain starters. The final spot will go to either Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz.

Liverpool Motivation

The Reds are totally fresh and rested for this match. They will go all out to move nine points clear in the table and take a big step towards the title.

Slot’s side will have two-thirds of the possession and will need to guile to break Everton down.

Key Stats

Everton have won their last 3 league matches

Everton have taken points off Liverpool in 5 of the last 9 meetings (2 wins, 3 draws)

Liverpool have lost just 3 of their last 35 matches (27 wins, 5 draws)

Liverpool have scored 39 goals in their last 15 matches

Liverpool’s Salah has 5 goals in his last 6 matches vs Everton (2 braces)

Verdict

A very tight match looks on the cards. Everton often avoid defeat in the derby but Liverpool are fresher and more motivated. I see Salah scoring in a Reds win.
