Crystal Palace faces Man Utd in English Premier League on Wednesday night at Selhurst Park. The Eagles have hit a recent slump whilst Erik Ten Hag’s team looks like title challengers in their current form. Dutch target man Wout Weghorst could make his debut after joining United.
Crystal Palace Form
Palace have been up and down all season. Their opening seven league matches brought just six points (W1, D3, L3). Their next six fixtures brought four wins as the side looked closer to last season’s level. They beat Leeds (2-1), Wolves (2-1), and Southampton (1-0) at home and won 2-1 at West Ham in that streak.
A 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest prior to the World Cup break was a blow and they’ve been below par since the resumption. A 3-0 home loss to Fulham saw Patrick Vieira demand a reaction, which he got with a 2-0 win at Brentford. Three successive losses have followed though, 4-0 at home to Spurs (having been 0-0 at half-time), 2-1 at home to struggling Southampton in the FA Cup, and 1-0 at Chelsea. They produced 1.67 xG On Target and arguably deserved a draw at Stamford Bridge.
Crystal Palace Team News
Vieira looks set to be without Joachim Andersen at centre-back after a calf injury at Chelsea over the weekend. James Tomkins is set to deputise in his place.
Palace could bring a genuine striker into the XI in the shape of Odsonne Édouard or Jean-Philippe Mateta. That would see Wilfried Zaha returns to the left flank and Eberechi Eze back in the midfield trio.
Crystal Palace Motivation
The side needs a result after their recent poor form and a loud midweek Selhurst Park crowd will demand their play at a high intensity.
A draw would be a very good result and Vieira would bite your hand off for one. The Frenchman hopefully won’t switch to a back five or play defensively in this match, though.
Man Utd Form
Since their thrashing by Man City back in October, United have lost just once in 11 league fixtures. In all competitions, they’ve won nine successive matches. Their only league defeat in the last three months was 3-1 at Aston Villa on a day when they didn’t turn up.
In the last three fixtures, they’ve beaten Everton (3-1) in the FA Cup and Charlton 3-0 in a League Cup quarter-final. Thanks to some very generous refereeing for the equaliser, they beat Man City 2-1 at home in their last match. They limited their rivals to just 0.65 xG and five shots from 71% possession.
Man Utd Team News
Ten Hag is without Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both face late fitness tests after taking knocks in the Manchester derby. Dutch striker Wout Weghorst could make the squad after his arrival on loan from Burnley.
For this match, Fred could drop out with Antony or Alejandro Garnacho coming into the XI. Luke Shaw could retain his surprise position at centre-back in preference to Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire. Aaron Wan-Bissaka will once again deputise for the usual first choice right back, Diego Dalot.
Man Utd Motivation
It’s a big week for United: after playing the derby before this Palace fixture, they play Arsenal afterwards. There’s a chance this may see focus just a little below 100% for that reason.
Still, anything less than a win will feel like a defeat with the nine-point gap to log leaders Arsenal. Ten Hag’s side will try to attack but also be aware of the threats posed by a dribble-heavy Crystal Palace side.
Crystal Palace have lost 4 of their last 5 matches (all comps)
Palace have W3 and L3 of their last 6 home PL matches
Crystal Palace have conceded in 8 of their last 9 home PL fixtures (15 goals leaked)
Man Utd have won 9 successive matches (all comps)
Man Utd have won 5 of their last 8 away matches (PL)
Man Utd have conceded in 5 of their last 6 away PL matches
This match should be a feisty one, being a night fixture with the tight ground and loud home support. However, Palace are struggling right now and Man Utd are flying. Provided Rashford is fit, the away side should be too good and are backed to win at Palace.
