Dortmund host Bayern Munich at Signal-Iduna-Park on Tuesday night in the German Super Cup. BVB thrashed RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final in May. The Bavarians won the Bundesliga by 13 points last season having scored a mammoth 99 league goals. The hosts have lost Jadon Sancho to Man Utd whilst David Alaba has left Bayern for Real Madrid. Both coaches are yet to win silverware in Germany and will see this as a great chance.
Dortmund Form
Dortmund ended last season in superb form, winning their final eight matches in all competitions. They scored an impressive 26 goals in those matches but went four matches without a clean sheet to end the season.
BVB have started this season with a 3-0 away win at Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal as Erling Haaland plundered a hattrick. The first Bundesliga match of the campaign saw a 5-2 home victory against Eintracht Frankfurt as Haaland again scored twice and assisted another two. New coach Marco Rose has settled in very well at the club.
Dortmund Team News
Dortmund have several injuries and doubtful players to deal with for this match. Dan-Axel Zagadou and Soumaïla Coulibaly are out in defence and Mats Hummels is a doubt with a knee problem. Thomas Meunier is also out at right-back.
Both Thomas Delaney and Emre Can are also doubts in midfield. It may be Axel Witsel covering in an unfamiliar central defensive role once again. Further forward, Julian Brandt is also out in attack but Dortmund have plenty of cover with Gio Reyna, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus.
Dortmund Motivation
Marco Rose’s sides play really attacking football and won’t change a great deal for this match. However, with the injuries in defence, the side may need to sit a little deeper to protect Witsel at centre back and use more of a counter attacking approach.
Dortmund will be very motivated for this match and desperate to win this trophy to give Marco Rose the first silverware of his managerial career in Germany.
Bayern Munich Form
Bayern had a great league season last time out with 99 goals scored and with just four defeats in their 34 Bundesliga matches. After being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League despite a 1-0 away win at PSG, Bayern won four of their final six league matches to seal the title. A 6-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach was followed by a 2-2 draw at Freiburg and a 5-2 final day thrashing of Augsburg.
Die Roten began this season with a 1-1 away draw at Monchengladbach as they needed a Robert Lewandowski leveller to take a point.
Bayern Munich Team News
Bayern have two injuries in defence to deal with. Benjamin Pavard is likely to be out with an ankle problem whilst a knee injury rules out Lucas Hernandez. 21-year-old right-back Josip Stanisic could start again at right-back.
Dayot Upamecano and Niklas Sule will anchor the defence after the departures of David Alaba and Jerome Boateng. Further forward, Corentin Tolisso is doubtful in midfield and Kingsley Coman is pushing to start in place of Leroy Sane.
Bayern Munich Motivation
Bayern will be very keen to win this trophy with new coach Julian Nagelsmann yet to win a trophy in his career after losing to Dortmund in the German Cup final last season.
Bayern won’t be much different under the coaching prodigy but could be a little more transition-focused and more open to playing on the counter-attack.
