Brighton host Man Utd at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday. The hosts are back in fine form and have won recently against both Arsenal and Tottenham, sides above the Red Devils in the table. Ralf Rangnick will oversee his penultimate match in charge with his side on a run of just two wins in eight matches and two clean sheets in 13. One positive omen for the visitors is that they have won each of their last seven meetings with Brighton in all competitions.
After a run of one win in 11 Premier League matches over more than three months, the Seagulls look back to their best. That streak saw six successive losses and a disappointing 0-0 home draw with bottom-placed Norwich. They have since won three of their last five league matches.
A 2-1 win at Arsenal came in a rear-guard effort before beating Spurs 1-0 at home in which they denied Antonio Conte’s side a shot on target. A 3-0 loss at Man City was next before a 2-2 home draw with Southampton, having led 2-0. Their most recent match saw a resounding 3-0 win away at Wolves.
Brighton Team News
Enock Mwepu is out for the season in midfield having just found some good form. Jakub Moder is absent with a serious knee injury. Coach Graham Potter uses all manner of formations and personnel and will tailor his side to United’s weaknesses.
Both Adam Webster and Tariq Lamptey should start after injury-hit spells this season. Both were only second-half subs at Molineux. Neil Maupay will hope to get the nod up front having played no minutes against Wolves. The same applies to experienced midfielder Adam Lallana.
Realistically, Brighton could finish between ninth and twelfth. Whilst they may not have all that much to play for on paper, their motivation in recent weeks has been impressive.
They will play on the front foot in this match and look to dominate Man Utd and the ball possession stakes. They will go all out for the victory.
Man Utd Form
United’s season is petering out with the last 12 matches all competition bringing just two wins. Ronaldo netted hattricks to inspire 3-2 wins against Tottenham and Norwich whilst he scored in the other win too. Rangnick’s arrival initially score reasonably good league form but it’s all gone downhill since being thrashed 4-1 at man City.
Before beating Brentford 2-0 on Monday, the side had just one win in seven with a 4-0 loss to Liverpool and a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in that run. They were then thoroughly outplayed but escaped with a 1-1 draw at home against Chelsea (despite conceding 21 shots and having just 35% possession). The shutout against the Bees was just their second clean sheet in 13 matches.
Man Utd Team News
Ralf Rangnick has a small pool of options to select from. He is expected to continue to use Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani, and Jesse Lingard despite their impending departures. Paul Pogba is still injured and Jadon Sancho is just out of the hospital with illness.
Harry Maguire is a major doubt for this one but Fred could start in midfield. Juan Mata will also hope for minutes again as the number ten. There may be rare outings for a few players such as Dean Henderson or Phil Jones.
Man Utd Motivation
It’s hard to tell if the players will be focused or not for a nothing match like this. Many of the players departing in the summer said their goodbyes to the Old Trafford crowd on Monday and may have mentally checked out.
They will play to win and to attack but they are likely to get dominated by Brighton. A draw may suit Man Utd to save face.
