Nedbank Cup Quarter Finals Preview

The Nedbank Cup will be local football’s main (and only) attraction this weekend as the eight remaining teams battle for a place in the semifinals.

Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Sundowns have all been kept separate in this round, so the Big 3 could all make the semi-finals for the first time in nearly 20 years.

That said, Stellenbosch, SuperSport United, and Sekhukhune will have wins as their objectives as well. Our Betting Notebook brings you the statistical context you need ahead of the games.

Quarter-Final 1: SuperSport United vs. Orlando Pirates

A midweek win (albeit by a narrow 1-0 scoreline) has put the Orlando Pirates’ ship firmly back on track. Now the Bucaneers turn their attention to a competition they have slowly made their favourite. However, Gavin Hunt and SuperSport stand in the way of a third consecutive semi-final appearance. They were unconvincing in the last round and needed extra time to eliminate lower-division Cape Town Spurs, meaning they’ve won just 2 of 10 games played this year in normal time.

5 – SuperSport has progressed in six of the last seven Cup meetings between the sides, but the only Pirates win was under Jose Riveiro.

Team to progress: Orlando Pirates
Value bet: Under 2.5 goals

Quarter-Final 2: Stellenbosch vs. Kaizer Chiefs

The Maroons have forged a remarkable reputation in Cup competitions recently, reaching five semifinals in the last two years. They have picked up form since their 5-0 hammering they received in Morocco at the start of the year, losing just one of the next 10 games across competitions.

But that’s where the rub is – the sole defeat came vs. Chiefs, who have been a bogey side in the past. Chiefs have already done the league double over them this season, and Stellies will also be playing their “home” tie away from home.

3 – This is the third Cup meeting between the sides, with Chiefs progressing in each of the last two.

Team to progress: Kaizer Chiefs
Value bet: Both teams to score

Quarter-Final 3: Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Sekhukhune

Just a week after losing 4-1, Sekhukhune will travel to the same opponent in the Nedbank Cup for the first meeting between the sides in Cup competition. Both teams dropped points during the week and will be eager to make amends quickly.

For both, this tournament is also important because they were losing finalists in the last two editions – 2023 (Sekhukhune) and 2024 (Sundowns). Their last meeting saw Over 5.5 goals between both sides, but they could be more reserved in a Cup tie.

20 – This will be Sundowns’ 20th home game of the season, and they have lost just once at home so far, drawing two and winning the other 16.

Team to progress: Sundowns
Value bet: Over 1.5 goals

Quarter-Final 4: Durban City vs. Marumo Gallants

The only Sunday fixture features the only non-top-flight side remaining in the competition. And while the away team are the higher placed of the two on the football hierarchy, the gap is not that big.

In the top two divisions, the teams are just separated by two places, and they were competing at the same level less than a year ago. Gallants won the head-to-head 3-2 last season, but it’s clear they are simply not good enough defensively. They have conceded 31 goals in the league, more than any other side in the top flight and more than any other side in the top two divisions.

1 – Durban City have lost just one of 12 home games all season, drawing one and winning the other 10.

Team to progress: Durban City
Value bet: Over 2.5 goals
