AFCON 2023 Qualifiers Key Stats

The AFCON 2023 qualifiers continue this week as nations look to book their spots in Ivory Coast next year. Let’s look at some interesting stats for this week’s matches.

Burundi v Cameroon

Burundi welcomes Cameroon in the 2023 Afcon Qualifier clash on Thursday. In the last match, Burundi managed to salvage a late point against Namibia. Meanwhile, Cameroon is yet to get the ball rolling as their clash against Kenya got cancelled. 

• In the last five Afcon Qualifiers, Burundi has only won one match, drawn three, and lost once. Their last win came against Mauritania in 2020. 

• At home, in the last five matches, they have obtained three draws, one loss, and one win. In that process, they scored 7 goals and conceded 8 goals in total. 

• Burundi is riding on a rough patch recently having lost three matches, drawing one, and winning one in the last five matches in all competitions. 

• This is the first time both nations face each other in any competitive match. 

• Cameroon has three wins, one draw, and one loss in the last five Afcon Qualifying matches. Their last loss came against Cape Verde. 

• The Indomitable Lions have three wins and two losses in the last five matches in all competition. In that period, they scored seven goals and conceded five. 

• Cameroon is unbeaten away from home in five matches winning four and one ending in a draw.

Ethiopia v Egypt

Egypt, who have finished as runners-up in two of the last three editions of the continental competition, eked out a 1-0 win against Guinea in their first game of the qualifiers. Meanwhile, Ethiopia will want to get their qualification campaign back on track after losing 1-0 to Malawi in the last match. 

• Ethiopia is winless in the last five matches they have played in all competitions with three draws plus two losses under their belt. They are also poor in front of goal as they managed to score five goals in those games while conceding seven goals. 

• At home, Ethiopia has failed to register a win in five last attempts losing twice and three matches ended in draws. Their last win at home came against Zimbabwe last year.

• The two rivals have crossed paths 16 times across all competitions so far, with 12 of them coming in the AFCON finals or qualifying phase. As one would expect, the Pharaohs have a better record in this fixture, leading 11-2 in wins while three games have ended in draws.

• This will be the first meeting between the two sides in over two decades, with them last squaring off at the African games in 2002, a game which ended in a goalless draw.

• Ethiopia are without a win against their northern rivals since 1989 and is the underdog in this match. 

Lesotho v Ivory Coast

Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg will host the clash between Lesotho and West African giants Ivory Coast tomorrow. 

• In the last five matches, Lesotho have managed one win and played to three draws, and lost one match. Their loss came last weekend against Comoros away from home. 

• When playing at home, Lesotho has one win three draws and one loss in all competitions and have scored 3 goals while conceding 5 goals. 

• Lesotho who has never qualified for the Afcon finals are winless in the last eight qualifying matches since their 2-0 victory over Tanzania in 2018.

• Ivory Coast is unbeaten in five Afcon Qualifying matches picking four wins plus one draw. Their loss last came against Ethiopia in November 2019. 

• Ivory Coast aims to qualify for their tenth consecutive continental showpiece since missing out in the 2004 edition in Tunisia. 

• Lesotho have one win in the last 17 matches in all competitions
