Once again Covid-19 has impacted Super Rugby Unlocked with the highly anticipated coastal derby between the Sharks and the Stormers called off. However, we still have two other matches on the go as the Cheetahs host the unlucky Griquas in Bloemfontein.
On Saturday, the likely Super Rugby Unlocked champions the Bulls face the Pumas in the final match of the tournament.
Below, we provide yet more tips and predictions for Super Rugby Unlocked Round 7.
Cheetahs v Griquas (Saturday – 16:30)
The Cheetahs enter the final round of Super Rugby Unlocked after a disappointing 30-13 loss against the Stormers. The Bloemfontein men failed to capitalise on their early tournament fortunes having lost back to back matches against the coastal sides.
The Griquas make the short trip to Bloemfontein after narrowly losing to the Sharks by a single point in Kimberley. They will be left wondering how they failed to close out the game after taking the lead in the 79th minute. It’s been a rollercoaster of a season for the Peacock Blues and they will hope for one last big performance.
Taking a glance at the head to heads for this fixture, it’s been predominately high scoring affairs with the lowest total points count sitting at 55 points in the last six. Interestingly, the Griquas have won in three of the last fixtures and I expect them to put in a spirited performance this weekend. When given a head start of three converted tries, I’ll happily be in the Griquas camp.
Bulls v Pumas (Saturday – 16:30)
The Bulls enter the final round almost guaranteed of claiming the title of the Super Rugby Unlocked tournament. It’s been an impressive tournament from the Loftus men with their solitary defeat coming in a tightly fought encounter against the Cheetahs in Round 2. I believe Jake and his chargers will be keeping one eye on the Currie Cup encounter against WP the following weekend.
The Pumas were due to face the Lions in Round 6 but a late cancellation occurred due to a COVID outbreak. As a result, the low veld side have seven players in quarantine and have been unable to train all week. The Pumas have remained competitive throughout the tournament despite several disruptions along the way.
I expect this game to be tighter than what the bookies are offering. Given the potential rotation and the fact that the Bulls have secured the title, I believe the Pumas will cover the 30.5 spread on offer. If the weather plays its part, this should be a high scoring encounter.
