Springboks Rugby World Cup Scotland

Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber has named a formidable squad for South Africa’s Rugby World Cup opener against Scotland on Sunday. Faf de Klerk, who will earn his 50th cap, is one of 11 players to retain their starting places from the team which recorded a record victory against New Zealand two weeks ago.

The Springbok starting pack sees just one change at No 8, with Jasper Wiese stepping in for Duane Vermeulen, who moves to the bench. In the backline, Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel team up in midfield, and Cheslin Kolbe returns as the left wing, replacing Makazole Mapimpi.

Injury keeps two players, Canan Moodie and Jean Kleyn, out of contention for selection, with hamstring and knee issues respectively.

Coach Nienaber has chosen a six-two split in favour of forwards on the replacements’ bench. Bongi Mbonambi (hooker), Ox Nche, Trevor Nyakane (both props), RG Snyman (lock), Marco van Staden (flanker), and Vermeulen are the impact forwards, while Grant Williams and Willie le Roux provide the backline cover.
