Gift Leotlela, Shaun Maswanganyi and Akani Simbine flew the flag for South Africa as they qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s 100 metres.
Leotlela was the fastest South African in the heats, qualifying with a time of 10.04 seconds. Simbine, too, was convincing, with Simbine keeping his bid up for a medal and US-based Maswanganyi throwing his name in the hat.
In the men’s football, there were wins for Mexico, Japan, Brazil and Spain as they each booked their place in the semi-finals.
