Tatjana Schoenmaker was the headline act for Team South Africa in Sunday’s Olympic action as she set an Olympic record of 1:04.82 in her heat of the women’s 100m breaststroke.
There were false starts in the men’s hockey and football alike, as South Africa were beaten by the Netherlands and France in those two respective sports.
In hockey, South Africa led 3-0 against a strong Netherlands side before going on to lose 5-3.
On the football front, David Notoane’s men were quickest out of the blocks against France and led three times before eventually succumbing to a late winner from Teji Savanier after an André-Pierre Gignac hat-trick. The final score was 4-3 to France.
Nevertheless, at least Schoenmaker gave the country something to remember this day by and hopes for a gold medal or two as she continues her sensational rise up the swimming ranks.
