All eyes will be on the pool on Tuesday, with Tatjana Schoenmaker looking to make history for South Africa, while there are plenty of other swimmers to watch for punters.
Team South Africa have not had much luck in rowing this year despite success in 2012 and 2016, but early signs suggest that they will have more success to cheer on in the swimming pool, as has been the case in past Olympic years, notably 2012 and 2016.
After a strong start in the rugby, it also looks likely that on Tuesday, the Blitzboks will pick up where they left off.
Women’s 100m Breaststroke Final
Tatjana Schoenmaker will have many South Africans rising early to watch her 100m breaststroke final at 4:17 AM.
Beating Lilly King in the semi-finals suggests that Schoenmaker’s Olympic record in the heats was not a false start and she genuinely has a shot at claiming gold. This is despite the fact that Schoenmaker reportedly prefers to swim 200m.
Best Tip: Tatjana Schoenmaker Gold Medal
Women’s 200m Butterfly
Moving to swimming, Zhang Yufei has been in sensational form and the Chinese star has a strong chance of picking up a gold medal in the 200m butterfly. The heats start on Tuesday, but if you are looking for an early bet, she is worth getting behind.
Yufei has the fastest time of the year in this event, 2:05.44, and is seeded first.
Best Tip: Zhang Yufei Gold Medal
Men’s Rugby: South Africa v USA
South Africa will square off against the USA in pursuit of top spot in Pool C. The USA are a solid side with the likes of Carlin Isles in their ranks, but they only scraped past Kenya and Ireland, while the Blitzboks were comfortable winners against both.
The Blitzboks are likely to claim this one. The USA are an emerging contender for honours across the Sevens circuit, but they are simply not quite on par with South Africa yet.
Best Tip: Blitzboks -6.5
