With the Olympics having truly kicked into gear after the opening ceremony, Sunday will offer you plenty of sporting action to choose from in Tokyo.
Our tips include matches in men’s football and women’s tennis, but after we correctly called South Africa’s poor attacking performance against Japan in their opening football match, David Notoane will have to hope we have it wrong this time.
Men’s Football: Brazil U23 v Ivory Coast U23
Brazil were breathtaking in their opener against Germany, with Richarlison’s hat-trick stealing the show. They arguably could have scored more goals had they not taken their foot off the pedal at 3-0 up in the opening half.
Ivory Coast began with a respectable 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia, but a star-studded Brazil side captained by Dani Alves will be a different ask altogether.
Men’s Football: South Africa U23 v France U23
France may have got off to a wobbly start with a 4-1 defeat to Mexico, but a squad featuring experienced heads such as Andre-Pierre Gignac should be able to steady the ship and win comfortably against a South Africa side that was totally out of the game in their 1-0 defeat to Japan.
Many of France’s players are plying their trade at top clubs, whereas South Africa are making do with a depleted squad. The defensive gameplan that served them to some degree against Japan is unlikely to work against a fired up French side.
Women’s Tennis: Ashleigh Barty v Sara Sorribes Tormo
World no.1 Ashleigh Barty from Australia should have little trouble seeing off Sara Sorribes Tormo, who has never risen above 46th in the world rankings.
Straight sets offers superb value for money and it is worth throwing your lot in with the current Wimbledon champion.
Best Tip: Ashleigh Barty Win 2:0
