The semi-finals of the women’s football tournament at the Olympics will take place on Monday, and if the quarter-finals are anything to go by, we can expect some real end-to-end action.
Meanwhile, in the men’s long jump, Juan Miguel Echevarria will be looking to bring the gold medal home to Cuba.
Men’s Long Lump
Juan Miguel Echevarria is the favourite for gold in the men’s long jump after consistently being one of the world’s best long jumpers over the past three years.
Echevarria topped the qualifying charts with 8.50 metres and has a slightly clearer path to victory than usual due to the absence of South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga.
Best Tip: Juan Miguel Echevarria to win Gold
Women’s Football: USA v Canada
The USA have not been at their best throughout the course of the Olympics, needing penalties to progress against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. They will be up against a Canada side which beat Brazil on penalties, suggesting they can go toe-to-toe with the USWNT.
This match is likely to go beyond 90 minutes, with plenty of value in a regulation time draw.
Women’s Football: Australia v Sweden
Australia stunned Great Britain in the semi-finals, but they have already lost to Sweden at the Olympics. Sweden have been the most consistent team in the tournament and are likely to beat the Matildas once again and book their spot in the gold medal match.
Sweden won the group stage match 4-2 and plenty of goals can be expected again with these teams both possessing fearsome attacking players. In particular, keep an eye on Sweden’s Magdalena Eriksson and Australia’s Sam Kerr, both of Chelsea.
