We are in Week 5 of the new NFL season which features another game in London and several pivotal divisional matchups. NFL punter Justin Simelane has prepared his best bets for this weekend’s action.
09 Oct 19:00 Jacksonville Jaguars v Houston Texans
The Texans look worse than they did last season and this game won’t be theirs for the taking. The Jaguars have a better defence than the Texans allowing 330 yards per game while the Texans allow 412.3 yards per game. The Jaguars lost last time but that was against a good Eagles’ defence, that won’t be the case this time. This game will be Trevor Lawrence up against David Mills, and you have to back Trevor primarily as he has the better team, which is averaging more points per game at 27.7 while Houston is averaging 17.7. Back the home team to cover the spread
Suggested Bet: Jacksonville Jaguars -7
09 Oct 19:00 Cleveland Browns v LA Chargers
We saw last weekend how the Browns lost to the Falcons, Jakoby Brisset never had enough time on the ball to get the passes that he wanted. Now the Chargers will apply the same pressure as the Falcons did and hope it works in their favour. Now Justin Herbert has much to work with and unlike Brisset, he gets more time with the ball. In Justin’s last encounter against the Browns, he had 4 passing touchdowns and passing yards 398. I see value with the Chargers here, Chargers haven’t lost to the Browns in 3, they will make it four.
09 Oct 19:00 New England Patriots v Detroits Lions
The Lions might be the underdog of the season, in just four games played they have covered the run line in all of their games, so that is the bet to go for here, they might not win but they should cover the run line. Surprisingly the Lions are one of the best-attacking sides, they are first in yards per game, covering 436.8 yds/pg. The Lions are the top 5 offensive side in the league and their offence has been the reason why they have been covering the spread.
Suggested Bet: Detroit Lions +4
09 Oct 22:05 Carolina Panthers v San Francisco 49ers
There is no value in betting on the Panthers as they lost to an injury-stricken Cardinals and will be playing a side that’s coming from beating the champions. The 49er’s defence is something else, they are currently number one with yards allowed at only 234.5 per game and their defensive end Nick Bosa is currently leading the league in Sacks. Baker Mayfield has been struggling so far this season and last weekend he was booed. In 4 games he has thrown 4 TDs and 3 Interceptions with a 54% pass completion. Baker will start this game and that even gives me more confidence going for the 49ers.
