The season’s final Grand Slam event will miss five big players who have been champions in New York in twelve of the last seventeen years, this follows after Nadal’s withdrawal from the US Open.

The four-time US Open champ announced his withdrawal on Friday due to the foot injury sustained in his French Open semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic in June. Furthermore, he also confirmed to not compete until 2022.

The recently turned 40-year-old Federer has also put the racket down for the rest of the 2021 season due to his third knee surgery. He only played 13 matches this year following in 2020 where he played just six times.

Juan Martin del Potro won the US Open back in 2009 when he beat Federer in the final. He hasn’t been immune to the injuries and underwent four wrist surgeries in 2010, 2014 and twice more in 2015.

Stan Wawrinka the 2016 US Open champion underwent left foot surgeries in March and June this year. His last appearance was back in March in the ATP Qatar Open.

Dominic Thiem who’s the US Open defending champion suffered a wrist injury in Mallorca this year. He missed Wimbledon and Tokyo Olympics respectively, also called a halt to his 2021 season.

However, Novak Djokovic who won the competition three times, Andy Murray and Marin Cilic who are also champions respectively are for the contest in New York.
