Horse Racing at Kenilworth racecourse

The showdown of the Cape Town Met commences this Saturday at Kenilworth, where Kommetdieding will look to defend his crown against a competitive field of 19 runners.

Kenilworth (Sartuday)

Race 1 – Apple Catcher

There has been plenty of betting support in the opening race of the day and its easy to see why. Apple Catcher stands out from the raced horses in the race and showed promising signs on her debut over this course and distance, where she finished second despite losing a length at the start. Sean Veale retains the ride and should be able to get the day off to a winning start.

Race 4 – Captain’s Ransom

The first Group 1 event of the afternoon comes in Race 4 with Richard Fourie aboard what is one of the finest fillies in the country in Captain’s Ransom. The Justin Snaith-trained mare has won 13 of her 17 starts and is unbeaten in three runs over this course and distance. She’s the odds-on favourite and rightfully so.

Race 6 – The Abdicator

Race 6 on the card is a tricky juvenile contest between some of the finest young colts and fillies in the Western Cape. The top selection goes to The Abdicator from the Brett Crawford yard. He found plenty of betting support to win on debut and should take a power of beating once again. Luyolo Mxothwa retains the ride and this son No Nay Never could be one to follow in the future.

Race 7 – King Regent

King Regent comes into this race in great form, winning two of his three starts to date. Grant van Niekerk retains the ride and described this horse to be his best ride for the day. There has been plenty of support for this gelding, shortening from 20/1 to favourite. The son of Dynasty is drawn at gate 3 from a huge field so should get the luck in running to reward the punters who backed him at a hefty price.

Race 8 – Isivunguvungu

Isivunguvungu produced a cracker of a run on King’s Plate day and would have blown that field away had it not been for a bit of luck in running. He switched outside at the 300m mark and stormed home to finish a close second. From draw 1, he should be able to stay on the inside rail and with Christophe Soumillon aboard, he should be too tough to oppose.

Race 9 – Commetdieding

The “people’s horse, Kommetdieding, looks to defend his crown in this year’s running of the Cape Town Met. The 5-year-old son of Elusive Fort won this race last year in what has been his only attempt over this course and distance. He’s always finishing his races off strongly and with a good pace in the race, Gavin Lerena will be right where he wants to be in the closing stages.

Race 10 – Nebrass

Christophe Soumillon could be worth following once again here as he rides Nebraas for the Sean Tarry stable. The 6-year-old son of Vercingetorix is proven as one of the most consistent stayers in the country and finished off nicely in his only attempt on this course last time out. With the extra 1000m at hand this time, the bay gelding will be much better suited to return to winning ways.

Race 12 – Mulberry Street

Sean Veale could be the jockey who opens and closes the meeting with Mulberry Street tipped to win this contest. The daughter of The United States won at massive odds on her debut and could come back stronger following her 12-week break. There’s been some betting support already in the market, and if the exotic bets don’t go your way, this could be the horse to take you out of trouble.
