There’s plenty of action to look forward to this weekend with a host of top-quality horse racing taking place at Turffontein and Greyville.
Turffontein (Saturday)
Race 3 – Swing Upon A Star
A tough Graduation Plate of 10 runners line out for Race 3 at Turffontein on Saturday. The top selection in this field goes to Swing Upon A Star who brings attractive form from KZN, winning a Grade 3 event in his last start. He debuts for the Sean Tarry stable and gets the ride of the blonde bomber, Pierre Strydom, on board.
Race 4 – Gilded Butterfly
Another tricky contest is on the cards here, but Gilded Butterfly stands out as the first choice. She tries the distance of 1800m for the first time here, but the manner in which she usually finishes off her races, suggests that she will be at home over the extra furlong, considering she has run her last three starts over a mile. Kabelo Matsunyane knows this daughter of Flower Alley very well and should go close.
Race 5 – Black Thorn
There’s certainly plenty of value in Race 5 on Saturday with Black Thorn tipped to past the post first in this Pinnacle Stakes. He’s a very versatile son of Pomodoro who is yet to be unplaced over 1800m. Keagan De Melo knows him very well and will be utilizing his favourite tactics of being handy in front and finding a bit extra down the straight. There has been some early support for him in the betting market, so best to place your bets early.
Race 8 – Vanderbilt
The best bet on the card at the highveld comes in Race 8 in the form of Vanderbilt from the Robyn Klaasen yard. This son of What A Winter has won his last five races in a row and is unbeaten on this course. Siyanda Sosibo takes 4kgs off his back and is expected to make it a double hat-trick, claiming six successive wins.
Greyville (Sunday)
Race 1 – Future Of Energy
Future Of Energy looks to be the right horse to start your Sunday off. The son of Futura comes of a lengthy lay-off after finishing 4th and 3rd in his two career starts. However, he has been gelded and that should do the trick to get him out the maidens at the third time of asking. The form lines have worked out perfectly and he should win this with relative ease.
Race 3 – Flirty Dance
It will be a true test of stamina in Race 3 at Greyville. Flirty Dancer is the top selection here after showing impressive signs in her first two starts over a mile. She now tries 2000m for the first time and if she can see out the extra 400m, she should be right there at the finish. Stable jockey Serino Moodley gets the ride for the Mike Miller yard and should team up to lead this filly home.
Race 4 – My Cherie Amour
My Cherie Amour was ultra-impressive in her last start. The 3-year-old filly lost close to three lengths at the start of her last race, but stormed home to win by over two lengths in the closing stages. She tries 100m further this time, and if her last run was anything to go by, she should be too tough to oppose.
Race 6 – Sashay Away
Sashay Away found one better in her last start, but should reverse the form on Meet At The George, who pipped her at the finish. Over 200m shorter, and with blinkers on, the daughter of Var should have things go her way. She’ll have an even better chance with Richard Fourie on board and is tipped to get her third victory on this course.
