This Saturday, the prestigious L’Ormarins King’s Plate returns to the recently refurbished Kenilworth Racecourse, igniting anticipation and excitement. We’ve carefully chosen our top selections for the day’s meeting, aiming to deliver an unforgettable and thrilling racing experience.
Kenilworth (Saturday)
Race 1 – Wissa’s On Fire
No.9 Wissa’s On Fire shares the top spot as the favourite in the initial race, guided by Danielle Rivalland. In his debut at Scottsville seven weeks ago, he displayed promise over this distance. Showing a strong performance, he moved up well and demonstrated resilience to the finish line. As the son of Captain Of All, he has likely benefited from the previous run, and with anticipated natural improvement, he emerges as a strong contender to watch.
Race 2 – Roman Agent
In the second race, No.4 Roman Agent, guided by Grant Van Niekerk, enters as the favourite. He showcased a promising debut over this course in the Non-Black Type Commonwealth Plate. Despite some inexperience during the run, his determined finish was encouraging. The son of Vercingetorix likely gained valuable experience, and with expected natural progression, he emerges as a strong contender and a leading candidate for victory.
Race 3 – Isivunguvungu
No.4 Isivunguvungu, led by jockey Richard Fourie, assumes the role of the frontrunner in this race, marking his seasonal debut following a victory in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint after the 2022/2023 season. The break is likely to have positively impacted his condition. Notably, he boasts an impressive track record over this distance, securing four wins, three second-place finishes, and one third-place finish from as many starts.
Race 4 – Mrs Geriatrix
No.7 Mrs Geriatrix, under the guidance of jockey Richard Fourie, is strongly supported to return to the winner’s circle. In the Grade 1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas, she displayed a commendable effort, finishing strongly despite the challenge of a wide draw. The daughter of Vercingetorix might particularly enjoy the drop to 1200m on this course. On her best form, we strongly fancy her to find herself in the winner’s enclosure this time around.
Race 5 – At My Command
At My Command, steered by Craig Zackey, delivered a commendable performance, securing second place in the Grade 2 WSB Green Point Stakes in the last outing. Despite displaying some outward tendencies in the straight, his determined finish was encouraging. In his sole attempt over this distance, he clinched third place. With the son of Querari drawing from a favourable post position of four, and with the expectation of a straighter path, there’s optimism that he can return to winning ways.
Race 6 – Princess Calla
At her best, Princess Calla with Richard Fourie aboard is expected to canter to the finish line. While she displayed signs of needing her last run in the Grade 2 WSB Green Point Stakes, tiring in the latter stages, the 6-year-old mare is now in her peak form for today’s race and is considered cherry-ripe. With her status as the best horse in this race, there is confidence that she can return to winning ways.
Race 7 – See It Again
In the main race, our selection is the favourite See It Again, ridden by Piere Strydom, who delivered an impressive victory in the Grade 2 WSB Green Point Stakes last time. The manner in which he quickened up and drew off at the finish was truly eye-catching. With his current form, we have the utmost confidence that he will be a dominant force and prove challenging to beat.
Race 8 – Tough Terrain
No.5 Tough Terrain, steered by Grant Van Niekerk, displayed impressive form in his recent victory over this course and distance. Settled at the rear of the field, he finished the race strongly. Notably, the horse that finished third that day has gone on to win in subsequent races. If Tough Terrain replicates that outstanding performance, there is a strong possibility that he can follow up with another impressive showing.
Race 9 – Aragosta
Concluding the day’s meeting with the final race, our confident pick is Aragosta. He secured an effortless victory in the Listed Summer Stayers Handicap in his last outing. Facing a comparable field this afternoon, there is a strong belief that he can replicate his success with Richard Fourie in the saddle.
