Bet Central’s top 3 selections at Sha Tin on 31 May
Race 1 – TSZ WAN SHAN HANDICAP (DIV I) (CLASS 5)
Race 1 gets our selections into action nice and early on Sunday morning. Being Class 5 quality, there’s a few runner here that used to compete at higher levels and have since fallen by the way side. With these runners looking to turn form its sometimes a nice way to spot some value on the card, and we’ve got one here for you.
TIP: KANBEKI MOLLY – We’re relying on Jerry Chau having a good day, with this being 1 of 2 of his rides in our selections. He’s using his 10 lb claim on the top weight here, and the last time this horse ran in a Class 5 he won without a weight advantage. Since then he’s had half a dozen rather average runs and now is back to company he’s beaten before. There should be some decent each way value on offer.
Race 6 – SHA TIN PASS HANDICAP (CLASS 4)
Race 6 is a Class 4 handicap over 1400m. The 14 runner field sees a few 3 year olds looking to progress through the rank, amongst some old knockers with more experience. I always prefer the youngsters in lower classes, and I think we’ve got one to back here.
TIP: PARTY GENIUS – He was a beaten favourite under Zac Purton last time out, running on for 4th. The last few chances he’s had have all come from very wide draws, and finally his luck turns being drawn 6. Having never been far off and looking to have scope for improvement, Purton retaining the ride suggests they feel his time has arrived. The pace shouldn’t be too hot, so look for Zac to use a handy start to control matters upfront and take the race away from rivals early.
Race 7 – TATE’S CAIRN HANDICAP (CLASS 4)
Usually draws are not a big factor in 2000m races, but Sha Tin has some quirks at this length. Race 7 is a 14-runner handicap over that distance. What’s interesting is the first turn comes really quickly, so those drawn wide often have to stay wide into the turn to avoid getting squeezed. I’m looking to inside gates for a selection here.
TIP: GALA NIGHT – Jerry Chau is the new appie on the block, and one of the few riding with a 10lb claim. This horse is a last start winner, with 3 wins in its last 5 runs, and Chau gets the top weight ride this time around. He should get an easy route to race handy, and that saved energy could be the winning factor into the home straight.
Best Bet – Race 6 – PARTY GENIUS
Next Bet – Race 7 – GALA NIGHT
Value Bet – Race 1 – KANBEKI MOLLY
