Champion versus Champion on Champion’s Day
The 10-race card starts in the early hours, and the focus will be on the 3 Group 1 standouts. In each of the feature races we see the star jockeys of Hong Kong, Zac Purton and Joao Moreira, saddling bitter rivals, setting up a cracking morning of racing.
Race 5 – The Chairman’s Sprint
Race 5 is The Chairman’s Sprint, a lightning fast 1200m. The two horses fighting out favouritism are Hot King Prawn and Aethero. It’s unsure which will jump the shortest price, but with Purton and Moreira chasing each other for the jockey championship, it likely to be a cut throat battles regardless of odds.
TIP: AETHERO – If the youngster in the race show it’s true class, it seems his race to lose. He can be erratic in behaviour at times, but I’m backing him to step up and prevail when it counts.
Widely considered ‘the next big thing’, here’s Aethero leaving them for dead:

Race 7 – The Champions Mile
The next Group 1 comes in Race 7, The Champions Mile. This year’s running sees arguable one of the best milers in the world, Beauty Generation, seek to break all records in Hong Kong. Chasing a 3rd successive win in this race, but more significantly bidding to become the first horse to register 18 wins in Hong Kong.
TIP: BEAUTY GENERATION – It would be ill-advised to back a horse likely to start less than even money. Conversely it would be equally unsporting to try find something to beat it. Include in multiples but this race is likely to be more about the crowning of true champ rather than a betting memory to cherish.
Watch last year’s running, which could be considered the easiest Group 1 win you’ll ever see:
Will it be three FWD Champions Mile wins in a row and yet another piece of history for Beauty Generation & @zpurton tomorrow? ??

Race 8 – QE II Cup
The last feature comes in Race 8, the QE II Cup. The hot favourite here is likely to start shorter than any other on the day. Exultant will be chasing a 4th Group 1 win in a small field with not much able to oppose it.
TIP: TIME WARP – I’m tipping this on pure value. Last time out Moreira got the better of Purton and Exultant, and at current prices I’d rather side with the more attractive price. A stayers race with a small field is a great opportunity for an upset, so let’s hope the card fall this way.
Here’s Moreira’s peach ride on Time Warp last time out:
