Bet Central’s top 3 selections at Sha Tin on 24 May
Race 5 – WERTHER HANDICAP (CLASS 3)
Race 5 brings us our first fancy of the meeting, in a 12-runner Class 3 handicap over 1200m. There looks to be a evident lack of pace in the field, and with only two clear handy runners, I’d fancy them to head off and not look to be caught.
TIP: GOOD LUCK FRIEND – This lightly raced 3 year old seems to enjoy running handy, something Joao Moreira is a fan of too. He steps us to Class 3 in just his fourth start, having been beaten favourite last time out in Class 4 company. With the light weight and favourable race conditions, I’d imagine a punchy start from Moreira getting him close to the front, and then doing everything late to hold on to the race.
Race 8 – STANDARD CHARTERED CHAMPIONS & CHATER CUP (GROUP 1)
The last Group 1 of the Hong Kong season comes up in Race 8, where a small 7-horse fields battles it out over 2400m. Last year’s winner, EXULTANT, is likely to go off at very short odds, leaving value about the rest of the field. The starting favourite has triumphed in the last two runnings of this race, but before that only four of the previous twenty two have ended up winning.
TIP: SAVVY NINE – EXULTANT is so well weighted it seems too good to be true but the shorter the favourite the bigger the target on its back. Joao Moreira rides the 4 year old youngster in the race, and from draw 2 will look to lead and dictate the pace. There’s a chance of rain on Sunday too, and this will suit him even more. With the experience of Moreira and his ability to mess up the pace and structure of the race to suit him, the double digit odds about my selection look more appealing for an each way bet then no price about the favourite.
Race 11 – VIVA PATACA HANDICAP (CLASS 2)
There are a couple of theories that could apply to reading this race. Race 11 is an 14-runner handicap over 1400m. There are plenty course and distance winners in this one, but I feel the opportunity could come from those stepping up in trip.
TIP: GLORIOUS SPECTRUM – Antoine Hamelin continues to impress me, and he takes the ride here after an impressive run-on finish over 1200m last time. The late work shown suggests the extra furlong could be ideal, and with some handy runners drawn wide, we could see a fair bit of energy sapped in the opening stages. If he can avoid that bustle and remain in touch round the bend, we could see a run-on finish catch the tiring leaders late.
Best Bet – Race 5 – GOOD LUCK FRIEND
Value Bet – Race 11 – GLORIOUS SPECTRUM
Long Shot – Race 8 – SAVVY NINE
