Our 3 best bets for Happy Valley 6 May
Race 3 – GLADIOLUS HANDICAP (DIV II) (CLASS 4)
Race 3 appears to be a mediocre Class 4 handicap over the 1200m, but the likely short favourite should take all the beating to get past.
TIP: YEE CHONG PEGASUS – Drawn nicely in mid-pack, Joao Moreira will have this 5 year old tucked in to what should be slowish pace. As long as he’s stays in clutching distance of the handy runners, he should be able to pick them off down the straight. In its last two runner-up finishes there’s been too much left to do at the business end. The head strong Moreira should be able to prevent that happening again.
Race 6 – CARNATION HANDICAP (CLASS 3)
Our next fancy comes up in Race 6. There’s a few runners with decent claims but we’ve eyed out what should be the market leader as the stand out in the race.
TIP: BE READY – Zac Purton resumes his regular engagement on this, and will be looking to build on recent results. All three of its last runs being within two lengths of the winners. He’s likely to let others take up the running, and from draw 3 will conserve energy for the slingshot into the main straight. He’ll likely be chasing down any of horses 5, 6, 7, 10 with a couple furlongs to go, but looks to have the consistency to notch up the win.
Race 8 – CELOSIA HANDICAP (CLASS 3)
Going only on form, Race 8 looks to be a two horse race. Unless betting movements suggest otherwise, we’ve got a firm selection worth considering.
TIP: ISLAND SHINE – Another Purton ride that we fancy, this one seems to just have CALIFORNIA RAD to beat. The rising 3 year old won easy last time out, but ISLAND SHINE’s brilliant ride to just finish 2nd seems to have the better progression of the two. Zac will be handy with the speed being drawn 1, whilst he adversary is drawn precariously wide in barrier 10. I’m hoping even a good jump will eat too much energy, handing ISLAND SHINE the run of the race coming down the straight.
