It’s that time of the week when we look at all the best bets and tips in the horse racing fraternity. This weekend, we see what’s good in Kenilworth and Scottsville.
Kenilworth (Saturday)
Race 2 – Le Mans
The Bipot on Saturday gets underway in Race 2 as the standout banker in the field, Le Mans, gets the top selection. The 2-year-old son of Wylie Hall from the Candice Bass-Robinson stable has solid form to his name, running third behind Lord William, with the horse that ran fourth in the race coming out to win, while there have been two runner-up finishes from horses in the same race. Aldo Domeyer retains the ride and should run a cracker.
Race 3 – Camille Claudel
It seems like it could be a quick double for the Candice Bass-Robinson stable and Aldo Domeyer in the form of Camille Claudel in Race 3 for the Drakenstein Stud. Bass-Robinson has some of the finest 2-year-olds in the country coming up and this daughter of Trippi and sister to Kasimir should be too tough to oppose.
Race 5 – Han Solo
There seems to be more value on offer in Race 5 where Han Solo gets the top selection in this race. Richard Fourie knows him very well and is seeking a hat-trick of wins. Over four runs over this course and distance, he has finished second twice with two wins under his belt. This is a very competitive field, but Han Solo should take a power of a beating.
Race 6 – Going Up
One of the best bets on the card once again comes in the form of a Candice Bass-Robinson-trained horse, ridden by Aldo Domeyer. Going Up ran a cracker of a race last time out in the Sweet Chestnut Stakes, finishing second behind Young Love. Domeyer takes the reins for the first time here and should coax a bit more out of the 3-year-old daughter of Gimmethegreenlight.
Scottsville (Sunday)
Race 2 – Captain Catman
Sunday’s card at Scottsville looks very tricky with just a few standout bets that could prove profitable. In Race 2, Captain Catman from the Glen Kotzen stable has produced two good runs to his name and should come out the maidens here. The 2-year-old gelding finished under 2 lengths behind Big Slick in both of his starts to date, but with Richard Fourie on board, he could be the one to look at in this race, despite a number of first-timers in the field.
Race 3 – Imposing
Easily the best bet on Sunday’s card looks to be Imposing and could rack up a double for the Kotzen stable if things go according to plan. He showed encouraging signs on debut to finish a short head in second spot. How he stayed on in that race proves that the extra furlong will be right up his alley. Imposing found plenty of betting support on debut and is certainly the horse to beat.
Race 6 – Warrior
Several Durban July-entered horses will get to field the KZN warmth in Race 6 in the Marion High School Pinnacle Stakes. Trainer, Justin Snaith, has a strong say in this field in the form of Warrior and Hoedspruit. The latter is the top selection though and should make his presence felt carrying a more suitable weight of 58.5kg. Four of his five wins have come over a mile and with in-form jockey Keagan de Melo aboard, he should be first past the finishing post.
Race 8 – Shell Seeker
After a 37-week lay-off, Shell Seeker steps back on the course after she trounced her rivals by over four lengths on debut, despite losing ground at the start. That victory was over 1200m and the manner in which she drew off at the finish suggests the daughter of Master Of My Fate will be at home over the extra furlong. Keagan de Melo retains the ride for the Mark Dixon stable and should be competitive off this rating.
