The second Grand Prix of the end-of-season triple-header takes place at the Lusail Circuit in Qatar. Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive world title last Sunday in Las Vegas, managing his Red Bull brilliantly to finish ahead of Lando Norris.
With the drivers’ championship decided, the focus now shifts to the constructors’ title. Three teams remain in contention, making the final two races a thrilling affair. McLaren leads the standings, with Ferrari just 24 points behind and Red Bull in third, trailing Ferrari by 29 points.
Mercedes’ unexpected one-two finish in Las Vegas surprised both the team and its rivals. Cooler temperatures in Nevada are thought to have contributed to the car’s improved performance. However, Qatar presents a different challenge, with temperatures soaring into the 30s and teams needing to adapt to the intense heat.
This weekend features a Sprint format, offering more points and limited preparation time. Teams will have just one practice session before Sprint qualifying and the short-distance race.
The Track
This is only the third time Formula 1 cars will race at the 5.4 km Lusail Circuit, characterized by its medium- and high-speed corners. The night race promises to be fast and intense, with drivers reaching top speeds of around 330 km/h.
The track favors maintaining momentum through its 16 corners, with minimal elevation changes. Mercedes notes that the start-finish straight, which stretches over a kilometer, is a prime overtaking spot, especially heading into Turn 1. The single DRS zone is also located here, adding to the action.
Despite it being winter in Qatar, the desert climate means high temperatures and humidity. Last season’s race left many drivers complaining of exhaustion, highlighting the physical demands of the circuit.
Four Teams in the Hunt?
This season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, with unpredictability dominating the headlines. The last six races have seen six different winners. George Russell’s stellar performance in Las Vegas was a highlight, but both he and Lewis Hamilton could face challenges in Qatar due to their car’s struggles in warmer conditions.
Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull have much more at stake as they battle for the constructors’ title. McLaren, chasing its first team championship in 16 years, has had the most consistent driver pairing this season. The Lusail Circuit suits their car well, and they delivered a strong performance here last year.
For Red Bull, Sergio Pérez will need to step up to support newly crowned champion Verstappen if they hope to put pressure on McLaren and Ferrari. However, Pérez’s recent form suggests this might be a tall order.
Ferrari must focus on keeping the heat on McLaren and maximizing points in both the Sprint and main race. With the constructors’ title on the line, every point counts in this high-stakes weekend.
