The PSL returns with Chiefs, AmaZulu & SSU

The Premier Soccer League returns this weekend following a midweek break. With three South African teams (Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch) still involved in CAF competition, there are fewer league games than usual.

However, there is still plenty of football to go around, with eight teams in action locally. Kaizer Chiefs host Marumo Gallants, AmaZulu take the short trip to Golden Arrows, and SuperSport United take the long trip to Polokwane City. Our Betting Notebook is a statistical guide that brings context to the weekend action.

Arrows v AmaZulu

Arrows needed a second-half penalty to grab a point last time out against Marumo Gallants. That goal kept their hopes of a Top 8 finish alive, something they have not done in four years. Mathematically, Arrows can still finish in 2nd position on the log, but a win here would keep them in place for the more realistic goal that is Top 8. AmaZulu, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold lately, with their leaky defence and away form causing them the most damage. While Arthur Zwane remains unbeaten in KZN derby matches (P4 W3 D1 L0), his team have conceded more than all but one team this season (33 goals).

6 – AmaZulu are winless in six away games, currently the 2nd-worst run in the league (after CT City).

Kaizer Chiefs v Marumo Gallants

Chiefs came up short against Chippa in their last fixture, being held to a 0-0 draw out in Gqeberha – a rather disappointing result. However, given that they still have a Nedbank Cup final to look forward to in a fortnight, the mood in the camp should still be relatively positive. In Gallants, they host a side that has struggled defensively all term. Not only have they conceded the most goals (36), they also boast the highest xG defensively (37), suggesting that they may have the worst defence in the league. This is the eighth meeting between the sides, and Chiefs have lost just once, yet two wins and four draws suggest a much closer encounter historically.

1 – Kaizer Chiefs have lost just one of their last eight home games in all competitions (W4 D3).

Polokwame v SuperSport United

Bottom of the table SuperSport United will be bidding to breathe some life into one of their worst-ever PSL seasons. 2025 has been tough for Matsatsantsa, who have picked up just one win and seven points since the start of the year. Both of these are the worst records in the division. No PSL team has been on a longer run of consecutive Top8 qualifications without missing an edition than Matsatsantsa (24). Yet, Top 8 will be the least of their concerns at the moment, with a potential relegation playoff looming. Fortunately for them, this weekend’s opponent has also suffered a downturn in fortunes and could be ripe for the picking. No wonder the away team are considered favourites.

1 – Polokwane City have won just one of their last 11 games (W1 D3 L7 all comps).
