T20 World Cup 2022: Team of the Tournament

It’s been two days since England won the T20 World Cup after beating Pakistan in the final. The English have four players in our T20 World Cup 2022 Team of the Tournament after winning their second T20 World Cup.

Runners-up Pakistan have two players in our team, with a few Indian players and one player each from New Zealand and South Africa. Let’s have look at our Team of the Tournament:

1.Alex Hales (England)

Inns: 6, Runs: 212, SR: 147.22

Alex Hales was my pick to be England’s top tournament batsman and he did not disappoint as he scored 212 runs in six innings with a highest score of 86* in the all-important semi-final against India. The Englishman had a fantastic tournament hitting the second most sixes in the tournament (10).

2. Jos Buttler (Wk, Cpt, England)

Inns: 6, Runs: 225, SR: 144.23

England’s skipper had a slow start to the tournament but stepped up when his team needed him in crucial matches. His 47 ball 73 against New Zealand was the standout performance in a must-win game for his side. Buttler led his team brilliantly and did much of the heavy lifting in England’s successful campaign.

He gets into this team as the captain and wicketkeeper.

3. Virat Kohli (India)

Inns: 6, Runs: 296, SR: 136.40

King Kohli would’ve been my player of the tournament if he’d led India to the final or if they won the tournament. His record in T20 World Cups and big games, in general, speaks for itself.

Kohli finished as the highest run-scorer in this tournament, with 296 runs to his name at a sensational average of 98.66. He scored four fifties, including a magical knock of 82* against Pakistan in the Super 12. The fact that a lot of people were calling for him to be dropped not so long ago makes his performances in the tournament even more impressive.

4. Suryakumar Yadav (India)

Inns: 6, Runs: 239, SR: 189.68

Arguably the best T20I player in the world right now “SKY” Yadav has had a fantastic 2022 in this format. He continued his impressive form in the tournament scoring 239 runs at an unbelievable strike rate of 189.68.

Among all the batters who scored at least 10 runs in the tournament (there were 144 of them), Suryakumar’s strike rate of 189.68 was the highest. If India had won the tournament, he definitely would’ve been one of the favourites to walk away with the Player of the Tournament award.

5. Glenn Phillips (New Zealand)

Inns: 5, Runs: 201, SR: 158.26

Only two centuries were scored at this year’s T20 World Cup and one of them was scored by this man. His match-winning 104 against Sri Lanka proved critical in a tight group. The middle-order batter amassed a total of 201 runs during the tournament, at an excellent average of 40.20 and an outstanding strike rate of 158.26.

6. Ben Stokes (England)

Mat: 7, Runs: 110, Wkts: 6

The man for the big occasion Ben Stokes makes this team based on his match-winning performance against Sri Lanka in a do-or-die clash and his 52 off 49 balls in the final. Stokes’ numbers in the tournament aren’t too impressive but you can’t deny his role in England’s success in the tournament. He makes this side as the all-rounder and 6th bowling option.

7. Shadab Khan (Pakistan)

Mat: 7, Runs: 98, Wkts: 11

Shadab Khan is the second all-rounder and the only spinner in the side as he was excellent in all departments of the game. He scored quickly with his 98 runs coming at a strike rate of 168.96 and was brilliant with the ball as well taking 11 wickets at an average of 15, with his economy rate of 6.34 keeping things tight for Pakistan through the middle overs.

8. Sam Curran (England))

Mat: 6, Wkts: 13, ER: 6.52

Sam Curran was named the Player of the Tournament and deservedly so after he exceeded expectations with the ball. The left-amer had a wonderful tournament, particularly in the death overs, and finished with superb figures of 3/12 in four overs against Pakistan in the final.

9. Anrich Norje (South africa)

Mat: 5, Wkts: 11, ER: 5.37

The Proteas’ player of the tournament Anrich Nortje did not deserve to get knocked out in the group stages after fantastic performances throughout the World Cup. Nortje had taken the most wickets in the Super 12 stage (11) before the Proteas were sent home by the Netherlands.

His pace caused batters problems throughout the Super 12 stage. Nortje’s 11 wickets came at an impressive economy rate of 5.37.

10. Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan)

Mat: 7, Wkts: 11, ER: 6.15

Shaheen Afridi had a slow start to the tournament after being an injury doubt heading into the tournament. His performances improved as the games became more important for his side. He stepped up in the big games taking 11 wickets in his 7 matches.

His ability to take wickets in the Powerplay makes him invaluable to the Pakistani side and he was unfortunate to suffer an injury during the final and couldn’t help his side in the last few overs. There is no bowler in the world right now that’s better with the new ball in T20Is than Afridi.

11. Arshdeep Singh (India)

Mat: 6, Wkts: 10, ER: 5.37

My pick to be India’s top tournament bowler and one of the players to watch in the tournament had an impressive World Cup. Arshdeep took 10 wickets in 6 matches at an economy rate of 7.80. His ability to move the ball both ways with the new ball made him a dangerous customer for opposition batsmen. His death bowling was just as good if not better.
